Orson Scott Card points out several of these in his How to Write Science Fiction and Fantasy while tackling the problems of exposition. Apparently the mechanism highlighted in this post was used a lot by hard SF writers who were trying to explain how things worked to the reader.

Ha ha ha ha ha! I liked WaifProphet best. Man, I hate that kind of shit. (I also liked the reference in DoTheyKnowItsChristmas -- which is also hilarious -- to "dead as a subcategory of ill" in re: the WaifProphet.

Yeah, I kinda wish they had more references to 80s sitcoms, where a lot of these cliches were repeated ad nauseum, rather than constant Buffy references. Yes, I know, since it's a wiki, if I don't like it I'm supposed to go in and fix it.

Its just exposition, if it didn't exist people would be complaining about how nothing makes sense. See complaints about Dune and Blade Runner for reference.

If you're looking for a drama/tragedy bent - I'd say just watch a season of 24. That show burns through the entirety of tried and true plot twists, tricks and tactics hourly.
