Is it a composite, or a straight pic? The details seem sort of weird... I can clearly see Lake Mille Lacs and Red Lake in Minnesota, but can't see the Missouri or Mississippi Rivers. Nice to look at though. Greenland looks cool.

I'm thinking it's a composite, possibly even a render with some really high resolution textures. not that I'm trying to take away from the picture. it's very well done.

I was looking for Earth from space photos on the Nasa/JPL sites the other day after seeing a scaled-down version of one showing the North Pole with a starfield in the background on Yahoo's news feed. I couldn't find them, though. Is there a hidden cache somewhere?

This "photo" is a 3D rendering composite using data from the MODIS sensor, which NASA compiled together into a big 1km-resolution dataset as a part of the Blue Marble project. The Blue Marble data is huge: at 1km = 1 pixel resolution, this makes a 45,200x21,600 image of the earth.

What it doesn't convey is the sense of vertigo or falling from a great height that astronauts on space walks report. Talk about fear of heights.

Speaking of America, though... why aren't there more photos of Earth with Hawaii as the focus? Grr. Sure, it'd be mostly water, but...

Home sweet home, indeed. That's an incredibly beautiful picture, but almost looks too real. Must be a rendering! It also makes America look strangely (!) insular... the field of view looks quite large, but only 1 continent is visible!
