Ho hum. Just another Adlog (Dlog?) in the spirit of Raging Cow and Miles Thirst, although I liked Progressive's fake Instant Voodoo site better. (And how come Verizon did a bunch of commercials referring to fake sites, registered the names and just redirected back to their DSL sales site? I wanted to see if the videos on hockey-checks.com could knock my teeth out.) Anyway, I'm eagerly awaiting the blog from The Eastwood Insurance Cowboy. (Come to think of it, I wonder if they'd give me discount if I wrote a blog for the Cowboy?)

As mascots go, the gecko ain't too bad. Beats the hell outta Spuds McKenzie and the Taco Bell dog. But I'm REALLY impressed that he knows how to type. Tricky feat, that. My cats still haven't figured out how to do it.

The Gecko, for anybody w/out television or living outside of the United States, is a television (and now internet) company spokesman for Geico automotive insurance. A friend of mine who owns a television in the United States explained that the Gecko was at one point humorous, but has been overused.

At least the gecko is less likely to cause a run of really stupid people going out to get geckos as pets like the Taco Bell dog did, and the movie 101 Dalmatians and any other ad or movie where animals are featured prominently. The gecko is still far, far, far superior to M$'s incredibly gay butterfly guy ad campaign. Just what I want, an idiot in a polyester butterfly suit giving me advice. Heck I can just go outside to get advice from wackos.

Shouldn't be too long before The Times tries to out the gecko as some kind of Brit Lit author. I mean the paragraph "I really enjoyed working with my fellow "canine" actors, cat fans stay on the lookout for another commercial. I don't remember much about the other ad since I fell asleep while they were filming it & all the work really took it out of me. " clearly has similarities with the work of Nick Hornby.

If anyone cares about the "history" of this, the gecko first appeared in ads where he was the annoyed recipient of calls for "Geico", when in fact he's "Gecko". Since then he's become the spokesmascot. And as such, appears in utterly bizarre merchandising items.
