overwhelming force

the military promises to use overwhelming force in response to the fallujah killings. eureka! such a brilliant idea. that will definitely prevent cheering crowds dragging any more american corpses through the streets. force is all you need. remind us what got the crowds so angry in the first place?

It's a sad day to be from Fallujah. To live in a town with people who would drag burning people out of their car and hang them from a bridge would be scary. I can't believe anyone, read any HUMAN, would do such a thing. And to think that the 4 who were killed were security for humanitarian aid (food delivery) is even more disturbing.

"Force" is relative. Fallujah is not a very big town, relatively speaking. And while the Fallujahns had expectations that the US Marines were going to be a 'soft touch', they may be in for a harsh awakening.

The techniques to militarily neutralize a city are well known, especially if that city is surrounded by overwhelming force. External travel restrictions, passes, curfews, the use of the 'carrot and stick' *and* especially local police forces to control local problems work wonders in "making it easier to not resist."

In any population there are only a very small number of people who wish to resist about anything. If you concentrate of these "hard cases", brutalizing the majority is unnecessary. Most people will be pacified if they just see some small improvement in their daily lives.
