Are these really pies though? Is shepherd's pie really pie? Is Boston creme pie really pie? Or Mud Pie?

I think not.

According to Merriam-Webster, a pie is:

1 : a meat dish baked with biscuit or pastry crust
2 : a dessert consisting of a filling (as of fruit or custard) in a pastry shell or topped with pastry or both

A Boston Creme Pie is defined as a cake:

Boston cream pie Function: noun
: a round cake that is split and filled with a custard or cream filling and usually frosted with chocolate

But I don't know, I think anything that can fit into the category of pie as defined above, or has the word "pie" in the name, should count as a pie for purposes of adhering to a theme in creating cards with recipes on them that the artist then sends to friends.

Also, I love pie.

PIE PIE PIE!!!

I ask you, jennyb, if meat or even custard pies can be considered pies, especially if you love them as you so profess.

I direct your attention to the Japanese "meat donut", found even in the Starbucks for heaven's sake.

Is this a donut? Is this Krispy Kreme deliciousness?

Consider again... isn't pie the essence of meat-and-or custard-free goodness?

Of course meat and custard pies are pies. The first definition of pie involves meat, and the second involves custard. I stand by MW by virtue of their general reliability and my own personal pie-eating experience.

"Meat donut" sounds dirty, like "donkey punch" dirty. Or perhaps "tang pie" dirty.

Thanks for an interesting find, grateful. I thought the "pie map" was a cool idea, sort of like netscape's "local guide" for pies.

amberglow- I feel the same way, but I have to admit I'm a little bit curious about Amish Sauerkraut Custard Pie. I especially like the suggestion at the bottom:

(hint: don't tell your guests that there is sauerkraut inside!)

I've also heard that using pears in place of apples makes the best apple pie you've ever tasted. A little slice of deception...
