Know a tune, but can't identify it? Melodyhound should help. Whistle the tune, record it, and their database can help match it. Can't whistle? No problem. Figure out the Parsons Code directly for the melody, and it will match that.

Nice link, donovan. Ah, some redemption for this thread. It seems Google doesn't do substring search like Metafilter's internal search.

You're not a true member of the Metafilter community until someone double-posts one of your posts. Still, a very useful site. My only quibble is that it doesn't show you the actual music in the search results — just links to Amazon. ThemeFinder, on the other hand, doesn't have "close matches" and doesn't have that nifty microphone app. C'est la vie.

thanks, i almost went crazy a little while ago trying to identify what turned out to be a cranberries song that somehow got lodged in my head :D at such times a service like this can be invaluable!

Wow! I remember once hauling a guy into my house who'd come to read the gas meter and playing him a song I'd just written, to see if he'd heard it before. He looked very bewildered indeed. This is definitely easier than kidnapping officials of utility companies.

Sounds very valuable. I get tunes in my head, sometimes they're new, sometimes something I heard and semi-forgot. I've often wondered how do successful songwriters avoid inadvertently duplicating someone else's work?
