George and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamtie. I watched the Presidential news conference but did'nt notice the tie effect, however a friend mentioned they had to put a piece of cardboard accross the TV to filter it out. More on the tie malfunction here the news conference video is available here .

don't they have people whose job it is to prevent these things? jeez louise. George W Bush is possibly the most stage managed US President in history. His "people" lined his head up with Mount Rushmore ferchrissakes. Did they forget the tie? Have they all been replaced with public access TV hacks? Or, as WRP implies, did they figure it was better for everyone to be focusing on the tie rather than the (lack of) content of his press conference?

It was actually a Magic Eye tie. If you looked at it long enough cross-eyed, the words "Elect Me" popped out.

I remember that episode of the West Wing where CJ stops Bartlet from going on stage with a tie that would Moire. Just another sign that the Bushhandlers need to watch more good TV.

Cut the preznit some slack. The stage manager-public-relations-flacks who are supposed to be dressing GW are all quite busy making the latest "Mission Accomplished" banners for the latest carrier landing to announce the end of these latest major combat operations in Iraq. It's unclear whether this will be before or after the latest round of callups for additional combat troops for Iraq will be made. But nice tie, anyway.

Okay, let's get this straight. Hundreds of thousands of people are out in a war zone, in large part thanks to this man; thousands are dead and the threat of a bloody civil, local or even world war looms high. And we're worried about his tie?

thank god i was watching hockey and missed that excuse for a press conference. i don't think i can watch W on the tee-vee any more, i'm pretty sure if i throw one more thing at in in sheer frustration it'll break. (and what with the strong, booming economy and all i can't afford to buy another one to replace it.)

Amberglow: I suspected as much. It works on so many levels: 1) it generates news (594 Google News hits at the moment) out of a complete, absolute nonevent, 2) it makes him look far less slick, less polished, more like a "regular guy" (who among us can't sympathize with regret over a wardrobe choice that Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time?) - yet another confirmation to the (admittedly large) minority that got their knickers in a twist over Lewinsky that he is the Anti-Clinton, and 3) it actually distracts the eye so it's harder to concentrate on other troubling aspects of the conference, like the fact that it took him 10 minutes into his statement "to the American people" to actually look the American people (the camera) directly in the eye, not to mention the fact that every content-free line of the speech and every evasive non-answer to every question was ripped directly from the version of the Talking Points software Condi, Scott, Dick, and Colin have been running this month. Also: source, please? (I believe you, just want a source for when I pass this on).
