Where is Rusty? An abandoned community cries out for its creator to return.

I took Rusty out for coffee a couple of years ago.

Nice guy.

Did you remember to let him out of the car afterwards? Otherwise we may have solved the mystery.

Why is this on MetaFilter?

WHO is Rusty?

And would I need an <unknown _object_00235> to know what a Rusty is?

how long as K5 been nothing but crolling comments anyway?

Last I talked to rusty he was doing some consulting work. Perhaps he made that his main focus for now.

Poor old Rusty. He's gone a few weeks, and already they're threatening to sue him. This is nothing but user petulance. Rusty should revoke all memberships, and replace the front page with a big picture of him & the missing $30,000 in some Hawaii brothel.
posted by seanyboy at 1:53 PM on April 27, 2004

Judging by the fact that hundreds of current K5 members are engaged in a heated debate on that topic, I'm not too worried.

Boy, and I thought Matt had it bad when he took a vacation.

This is why website owners shouldn't beg for money. Because then the users feel owed.
posted by smackfu at 2:15 PM on April 27, 2004

What is interesting is Rusty is still there. He last posted about 3 hours ago. He's just ignoring the coup attempt on the front page.

Hey, I hang here to get away from K5 whining ...

Erm, if the owners ask for money, then the users are owed. I'm not a member of K5, but the poster there seems to have a point. If Rusty doesn't feel like doing administration duties, he could at least let somebody else handle it for awhile.
posted by unreason at 2:21 PM on April 27, 2004

Really, it doesn't even matter whether Rusty does any admin duties or not. The site gets by just fine without him. People have been gently teasing him about running off with the donated money for ages.

The thing that really rankles here is that he's decided to leave new user registrations turned off for no reason other than his own whim -- fine, if it was his website and his alone, but in a big way k5 belongs to the people who post there, the people who donated.

30K is a lot of money for a community weblog.

I wonder what is the ad revenue for this community weblog.

Wasn't kuro5hin reorganized as a non-profit some time ago? Doesn't Rusty report to a board of directors?
posted by timeistight at 3:14 PM on April 27, 2004

Heh wow, rusty doesn't even have to do anything and he makes it onto the front page of mefi.

It's okay everybody, he comes back!

I've gotten so much value out of xxxxxxxx, it's absoutely great. I think there's some people on the xxxx that are being absolutely awful though, it's important that you can do whatever you feel needs to be done without having to poll everyone first. When you've basically given X,000 strangers an awesome present, there's not going to be much complaining if you need to make some changes. -guerilla, from a website that doesn't exist

Thanks Matt et al for the awesome present.

This is silly. Scoop is set up on k5 such that the site runs itself. The site is fairly autonomous. Sure, he's got obligations to the community, but on his own calendar.

"k5 is dying" is getting as tired as "Apple is dying."

To elaborate on our illustrious leader's comment, I believe the consulting work Rusty's busy doing is for Markos and Jerome. I'd never used Scoop before Kos implemented it...the threading and diaries really make it addictive. IMO, Rusty should take all the time he needs and/or desires to improve the system, and I'm certain it will be worth it.

Yeah, although the word "donation" sortof implies that there's not a technical obligation on the part of the recipient.

The talk of suing rusty for fraud seems pretty stupid and mean spirited. Calling him to make an accounting seems reasonable... threatening to whack him with a stick just seems wrong.

If only it were donations.

This story paints a different picture.

Disclaimer: I didn't contribute anything, besides some stories. Neither am I complaining about anything. I "left" the site a year back.

Altogether you contributed over $37,000 in memberships, donations, and text ads

holy shit!

i want to see the photoshops of his wife. i've always wondered how bad they could have been to get him that upset. a few years back i had the same thing happen to me, but i was only offended because they used a body that's not as good as mine to p-shop my head onto. otherwise i thought it was pretty funny.
