Elian: the Movie- coming soon to small screens everywhere. My TV is riddled with commercials for this epic, touch-your-heart-and-soul 4 hour saga of Miami's favorite son.

The advertisments claim this is a show which will cut through the dirty politics of two nations and show you a side of the story seen through the eyes of family who wanted what's best for the boy. I wonder if they cut out the part where Uncle makes a few hundred dollars a day from the donations pot on his lawn.

I could see half the shooting budget going solely to keeping angry protesters from every side of this little morality play away from the set.

This movie just seems to me like a dumb idea. Haven't the pundits agreed that we're all Elian'd out? If we weren't, would we not still be hearing about his continued life back in Cuba, the ongoing mental instabilities of Mariselysis in Miami, her budding romance (or not, whichever) with that Donato guy, etc etc ad absurdum?

It is an awfully slow summer for news, after all, or so I've been told. They could dry-hump this story a bit more if they really wanted to, I'm sure.

Well, I predicted at the time the actual events were taking place that it would turn into a TV movie in time for the November sweeps.
