I was seeing her ad on TPM for weeks; I wonder how much revenue she earned from grassroots planted outside of South Dakota. On the other hand, I wonder how much your average candidate gets from out-of-state big-spender contribution funnelling... I imagine Cheney's got enough dough to send $2000 to each Republican trying for a national seat, for example.

Reading the commentary on the DailyKos link is like reading sports commentary... "If we keep the full court press on, it'll reduce the resources available to the GOP to spend on each race. Come November Diedrich isn't going to have the internal-GOP starpower that he had this month... especially if DeLay is pinned down in Texas. " Of course, I guess it's not unprecedented. This guy was so good at the political stuff that they gave him tenure down at ESPN...

specialk420, as a known Democratic partisan ;-), is posting something to make all those who support the Democrats make feel a little more confident. Especially in South Dakota where the race was close. Although Space Coyote's link did provide a nice quotation: "I think the real point is you judge a person by the friends they keep, and look where she's focusing her fund-raising efforts," Glodt said. "Anybody can look at these blogs and the content, and realize the values they are promoting are completely contradictory to the South Dakota values she purports to represent."

MrMoonPie, the "secret site" is this page, which is the one you arrive at when clicking on an ad found on blogs. The donation page isn't referenced on her main site. It's a pathetic claim that this is "secret", a custom donate page for specific ads is a totally normal thing found on many candidates' sites. There's nothing remotely illegal about it, so I don't know why her opponents tried to make it seem sinister. I suppose they had nothing better to attack her with.

Actually, I thought this was the pendulum in D.C. specialk420 was talking about, but it looks like they've taken it down. Wow, she's only a couple years older than me. Herseth does indeed look like she should be running for sorority president, instead of the U.S. House, but her bio indicates she's more than just a pretty (or is that HOT HOT HOT?) face. In addition to being named one of Georgetown's five most outstanding seniors, Herseth graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a B.A. in Government and received the Justice Edmund Douglas White Medal for outstanding service to her community. Herseth next graduated with honors from the Georgetown University Law Center and was a senior editor of the law review.

And then I thought it was a really strange comment by skallas on the Democrats' "electability". Luckily, the pendulum swung back to sanity in my case and meaning was restored.

Steve, just pick some NewsFilter piece about some Republican who gets elected, link to an InstaPundit article about the election, and then talk about "the tide turning," or some such cliche. Based on the general reaction to this post, you should expect yours to be well received. ...and if she's photogenic and nationally unknown, S@L, all the better. We still don't know much about Herseth Herself. We've all just seen her today, and there can't be many South Dakotans here (are there any?) to verify her credentials, her attitude, her ability to make points, what points she makes, y'know, how good she is at politics. She's got a pedigree, but pedigrees don't always portend ability.

Time to eat some humble pie, nutters. you know, this is why I sincerely regret Dean did not get the nomination. because I kind of figure his campaing using this tagline for promotional T-Shirts. it would have been much, much funnier. hmmmm.... what should I post..... What is this? The 2nd Democratic special election win? Kerry's crappy campaign is neck to neck with Bush's uber-spend campaign? And Obama is polling far ahead in the battle for an open GOP senate seat in IL, which combined with one other senate win (or with McCain taking a cabinet position and having his replacement chosen by a Democratic governor) in November would give the Democrats the Senate and thus confirmation power over as many as four Supreme Court nominations in the next four years. But a note of caution to excited liberals: the two recent special-election victories highlighted the fundraising power of blogs, but that power will be greatly dilluted when spread out among hundreds of races rather than focused on one. I'm much less likely to send 10 bucks to a candidate in South Dakota or Kentucky in November than I am now, as there will be important races closer to home.

IJR: The thing is, while the blogs were certainly focused on the special elections, the republican direct-mail campaigns weren't exactly letting them go by unnoticed either. So if blogs trump direct mail and other traditional republican methods here, at least one can believe they will be a little more effective in November than what the Dems had previously, nothing.

I also think that the GOP direct-mail strategy became so killer after they adopted the Gingrich strategy of running someone for every seat, post, and position, even the longshots, as a way of tying up the other aprty's resources and disallowing the safe incumbents from fundraising for their colleagues who are facing a real challenge. For the first time ever, Democrats are trying to do this as well, thanks to a certain new PAC.
