Of course 5 years from now that will be different, but 5 years from now everyone will be running free GNU on their 200 MIPS, 64M SPARCstation-5. roflmao Seriously though, this post seems slightly misleading - granted, Tanenbaum and Torvalds are discussing the future of kernel design, but their discussion is twelve years old. Are you posting it for its technical content, cultural/historical value, or purely for amusement?

Well, this does have some implications with a current, well, hatchet-job book released by the Alexis de Toqueville Institute. Come with me on a journey through Slashdot:

Ken Brown writes a book saying, among other things, Linus couldn't have possibly written Linux. He was just a dumb kid, and all. Linux is too complex, and works too well for it not to have other people's IP in it.

So that was fun. Basically AdeT is partly funded by Microsoft, so it appears that this is just FUD. When the programmer of MINIX says that Linus didn't steal anything, and your whole book is based around the premise that Linus stole from MINIX, you are pretty much screwed.
