agreed, ltracey, and protest and lobby against them forcing their views into law all you want and I'll be right behind you. But I'm not talking about humor value here, not sociopolitical value. Most of the anti-christian cracks I see online aren't that funny or that original and some are downright mean-spirited. It all seems like a pile-on sometimes, and in a pile-on situation, my sympathy goes direct to the pile-onee. So it can backfire on you. Plus I'm sure at least some of my reaction is my pereverse desire not to see anyone get too secure in their beliefs, which is the only thing keeping me going. amberglow: everyone that's not a hetero Christian has reason to be worried about this shit. I'm a hetero, and something of a Christian, and I'm worried about this, too, but I also don't wanna buy into the whole polarization/culture war bullshit they're pushing. They may be handing us the bait that dosen't mean we have to rise to it.

It all seems like a pile-on sometimes, and in a pile-on situation, my sympathy goes direct to the pile-onee. Not if the pile-onee was asking for it in the first place. I can think of several classic (and historical) examples right of the top of my head.

Not if the pile-onee was asking for it in the first place. That's the attitude that alienates me, magullo. When someone is an asshole, but you generally agree with them, their helpless victims; if their an asshole you don't generally agree with, they're "asking for it" and got what was coming to them. Still a lynchmob mentality, only thing that changes is which direction the mob's running and who's hanging from the tree.

This song is not lynching or piling on anyone--it's a fun, semi-clever way to let people know what's going on. Music and humor (2 great tastes that taste great together) have always been powerful ways to inform and motivate while entertaining. Assholes with all the power to create policy and law that hurt us can't be lynched--only impeached or voted out. Would you have defined all the punk songs insulting Reagan as lynching? or all the anti-vietnam songs? or even that weird Russell guy on PBS? or groups like the Capitol Steps? or Kinky Friedman? or any of these political songs as piling on or lynching? or this 1893 anti-Tammany Hall song?

It's not the song that reminds me of lynching, amber. It's just fish in a barrel humor like I said before. It's the endless parade of "Gawd, them christians/republicans/fratboys/jocks/mulletheads/rednecks are dumb" posts and the lock-step, "yeah, they sure are, lemme join the gang tackle" stuff that does. And yeah I realize, that in the larger world the opposite numbers of these groups are doing the same thing. But within the context of metafilter, it is the majority enforcing conformity. And I don't like that no matter where it's coming from.

you always complain about that, jon, but that's what people here like--all communities engage in reinforcing/bonding behavior--bashing those in power is one of those. It'll happen when Kerry's pres too. You should take it to MeTa. It's never about the topic or post or link when you do it, but about MeFi in general.
