Just when I think I waste too much time catching up on my wonk list, I see something like this, which reminds me a LOT of people waste much time on all sorts of things.

Beat me to it by about 5 minutes (spotted on MonkeyFilter - which has been really good recently).
I saw all these pics earlier today, in stills, but the animation cracked me up. posted by scarabic at 4:21 PM on July 9, 2004

Wait, I thought that both Kerry and Edwards are against gay marriage. Way back in the day, before Edwards got second in Iowa, he categorically stated on Meet The Press that he was opposed to gay marriage, at which point I said to my g/f, "Well, I'm not voting for him."
Or are they just dating? posted by BlueTrain at 4:48 PM on July 9, 2004

That's hilarious, especially given the forced, awkward love-fest that's going on between them right now in the "real world". posted by LairBob at 5:30 PM on July 9, 2004

Is it just me, or does it seem like this Kerry/Edwards gay love affair joke is getting so much play that some people might be led to believe it's real? posted by fungible at 5:59 PM on July 9, 2004
The Kerry/Edwards slash stuff is okay, but I gotta go with the S&M ticket. There is something about Mary. Cameron Diaz for president! posted by bargle at 6:09 PM on July 9, 2004

Let the obvious questions begin: who's on top? Does Theresa know? Does she care? Are any other political figures going to make cameo appearances? Will there be a hurt/comfort scene between Gephardt and Dean, commiserating in not getting the nomination? Can we expect the de rigeur crossover fic with Buffy?

What I have been trying to figure out is exactly why so many people seem to think it's wrong or strange for men to touch each other in friendly ways. Why is this such a big deal? posted by Orb at 10:29 AM on July 10, 2004
Why is this such a big deal?
Because (male) Americans are homophobic. My cousins in India, and many old-school (culturally aged) Europeans don't suffer from the same affliction. I've seen them hold hands and "get close" without any sense of apprehension.
Hence the term "metro-sexual". Straight men who take care of themselves aren't "straight", nor are they gay, so they transcend gender rules. I would be flattered to be called metrosexual, if it weren't for the fact that the norm for men is to have poor hygiene. posted by BlueTrain at 10:48 AM on July 10, 2004
why so many people seem to think it's wrong or strange for men to touch each other in friendly ways
Ditto what BlueTrain said. But it's all in fun, so what the hell. On the other hand, this will sound a little strange maybe, but when I was growing up I remember how friendly my grandfather and his friends were. These were people who themselves grew up in the era of WWII and the 40s. I remember how those guys called each other "Bobby" and "Johnny" and "Danny" and "Mikey", and they were always warm with each other in ways that would make most men today uncomfortable. But they didn't think anything of it then, nor were they gay-- it's just that friends were like family. It's rare for things to be like that today and so people get weird and uncomfortable about it and so make fun of it to deflect the embarassment. posted by miscdebris at 5:19 PM on July 10, 2004

It's also a family thing--some families are touchy; others aren't. It's warming Kerry's image up too. It's clear that they see it as a big contrast to Bush/Cheney--2 constipated, uptight guys. I think we'll be seeing a lot of it during the campaign. posted by amberglow at 8:13 PM on July 10, 2004
