Wait, I thought that both Kerry and Edwards are against gay marriage. Way back in the day, before Edwards got second in Iowa, he categorically stated on Meet The Press that he was opposed to gay marriage, at which point I said to my g/f, "Well, I'm not voting for him." Or are they just dating?

Why is this such a big deal? Because (male) Americans are homophobic. My cousins in India, and many old-school (culturally aged) Europeans don't suffer from the same affliction. I've seen them hold hands and "get close" without any sense of apprehension. Hence the term "metro-sexual". Straight men who take care of themselves aren't "straight", nor are they gay, so they transcend gender rules. I would be flattered to be called metrosexual, if it weren't for the fact that the norm for men is to have poor hygiene.

On the other hand, this will sound a little strange maybe, but when I was growing up I remember how friendly my grandfather and his friends were. These were people who themselves grew up in the era of WWII and the 40s. I remember how those guys called each other "Bobby" and "Johnny" and "Danny" and "Mikey", and they were always warm with each other in ways that would make most men today uncomfortable. But they didn't think anything of it then, nor were they gay-- it's just that friends were like family. It's rare for things to be like that today and so people get weird and uncomfortable about it and so make fun of it to deflect the embarassment.
