Superb. Especially the Space 1999 stuff: I always thought the Eagles and other spaceships from that show were about the most realistic-looking of any on TV.

As a Canadian you can probably be forgiven for not having his Blake's 7 page on your list.

The Alien drawings and models were cool, but the main mood of that movie comes from Gieger.

WOW. That's talent. It's incredibly interesting to hear the details of the various informal materials he found, scrounged, or borrowed from model kits, too. I guess every kid wishes s/he could do stuff like this in a basement workroom.

I was in junior high school back when 1999 was on, and I thought the spaceships were the best part of the show.

What about the Thunderbirds? As a kid, I really dug that show. Watching them again on cable it seems pretty hokey, but wow, how cool those puppets were as a boy.

What an enjoyable post - many thanks srboisvert. I spent hours drawing those ships from memory - they are truly inspired and launched many adventure fantasies.

Or is it Giger?

Who's counting?

The thing that always fascinated me about Space 1999 was how reactionary the captain was. There was none of this Star Trekky wishy washy liberalism. Every week aliens were evil and to be distrusted. The first reaction was always 'open fire', though this never worked and just seemed to encourage the aliens to come and have a fight. Indeed where there any episodes where the base defences permanently blew something up?

AFAIK Giger is responsible for the design of the Alien, and the ship the eggs are found in (including the pilot / navigator). I'm pretty sure Moebius is responsible for the space suits. Looks like Mr Bower may well have designed the exterior of the Nostromo though. His models were probably the best thing about Space 1999.
