Could someone please explain the way scoring works in bowling? preferably in complete idiot's terms.

Basic Scoring in Bowling : Each "Frame" has 2 bowls in it. The number you get in the first roll goes on the left and the TOTAL for the frame on the right. The total for a given frame is then put for the whole frame. The only times when you can get more than 10 points in a frame are when you get a strike or a spare. If you get a spare (knock all 10 pins down over the 2 bowls in a frame), then you also get to add whatever your next bowl is to that frame. For instance you get 8 on your first bowl of frame 1 and then hit the other two in the second bowl of frame one, giving you a spare. Then in frame 2, your first bowl gives you a 9. The total on frame 1 is now 19 (the spare plus the next bowl). Strikes have a similar premise, only they add the next TWO bowls. This has the added confusion of possibly being across frames. So in frame 3 you strike. Then in frame 4 you get a 9 and a 1 to pick up the spare. Frame 3 now has 20 points. However if in frame 5 you strike, and then strike again in frame 6 and get a 9 in the first bowl of frame 7, you would put a 29 down for frame 5. This is how you can possibly get 300 points. Every frame has a maximum of 30 points if you can bowl 12 strikes in a row. Clear as mud?

Derbs - there are 10 rounds. Each round gives you two chances* to knock all 10 pins down (unless you happen to knock them all down in your first chance). If you knock them all down in your first chance it is called a "strike". A strike is worth 10 points plus however many you get for your next two bowls. Therefore, the maximum you can get for a strike is 30 points (3 bowls of knocking down 10 pins). A "spare" is when you knock all the pins down in two chances. A spare is worth 10 points plus whatever you get in your next bowl. Thus, a spare is worth a maximum of 20 points. * in the 10th round you can actually get 3 bowls if your first bowl of this round was a strike. Hmm, not really the idiots guide but that's as simple as I could make it!

* in the 10th round you can actually get 3 bowls if your first bowl of this round was a strike. Minor correction here.. You get a 3rd ball if you have either a strike OR a spare in the 10th frame.

Blimey! That's made things slightly clearer. Thanks :) So does your next two scores add onto the strike, even if you don't get a strike on the next two? For example, if i get a strike, and then get 5 and 6 on the next 2 frames, is that strike worth 21?

Not frames... bowls. So If you get a strike and then get a 5 on the next frame (the total of the two bowls), you get 15. If you get a strike and 2 more strikes, you get 30 A strike and a spare = 20 The only way for the total to go over for a given frame 20 is to get 2 strikes in a row.

237 - #49 worldwide (Mark Sim). 8 strikes, 3 spares and a gutter ball :). Got 7 strikes in a row at the end, which was pretty cool.
