Question, is Ann Arbor a huge college town? I realize there is a college there that is big, and it is a town... but there seems to be a lot more Ann Arbor references/blogs compared to any other college town. I demand an explanation!

Ann Arbor essentially functions as an upscale suburb of detroit. That and its large, wealthy student populations leads to more hipsters and yuppies than you can shake a stick at.

The Arcata Eye Newspaper has the best police log. Friday, May 28 3:32 a.m. A blanket-bedecked man positioned himself by the front door to an I Street cooperative supermarket and started talking to himself and yelling. After talking with police, he walked off. 9:22 a.m. The same guy was arrested on the Plaza after allegedly being mean to trees.

college paper here (north of ann arbor) used to have a police briefs section that regularly featured detailed descriptions of men exposing themselves in public places - behind bushes, in bathrooms, in the stacks in the library. at least one per week, usually more. then the girl who wrote those police briefs graduated, and the number of nudity sightings dropped down to like one or two a year. i still suspect that she either made them up, embellished, or was sort of picky about which items were paper-worthy. (also suspect that 80% or more of the "man exposing himself behind shrubbery" was more like "drunk kid caught peeing".)

Ann Arbor is... weird. I don't like it very much, though mostly I'm still bitter about how I was at a camp there as a kid and this counselor looked at me and said "Ann Arbor is a BIG CITY, you know..." when it is, in fact, much smaller than Grand Rapids. Though Grand Rapids manages to avoid the bicycling without pants crowd, mostly because we are, on average, less stoned.

Damn, how'd I miss this thread? I'm mixed on Ann Arbor. I remember when it was more relaxed and less yuppiefied (ah, the halcyon days of 1997 and Tappan Middle School) and that still colors my image of it. It has a lot of cool people, mostly as a product of Community High, but they're mostly moved away by my age. It's only a matter of time before I get the hell out of here. My first reaction to the "upscale suburb of detroit" comment, though, was blind rage (townie soft spot) -- Ann Arbor has a fair sized downtown with office workers (a large portion of which are university workers), though most of the jobs are actually in high-tech industrial parks around the periphery. People who can afford to live here generally work here, and so do a lot of people who can't. It's easy not to realize how big the town is, though, spacially; I didn't until I started delivering pizza. What most people (okay, most U-M students, and a fair proportion of the rest) think of as the city is actually only the core, which is surrounded by huge swaths of houses and subdivision upon subdivision beyond. The "suburb" moniker is therefore warrented, a bit; the city has suburb density and it's difficult to live here without a car unless you eat at dining halls. (No highways cut through the center of town, though; they "surround" the administrative city, in effect cutting through the periphery). A redeeming factor is that it's beautiful, trees everywhere. I suspect the most vocal critics of Ann Arbor (and I agree with them on a lot of points) haven't lived in a real suburb.

Ann Arbor is not a conservative town, clavdivs. (Unless you're going on the global spectrum, not the U.S.) There's a democratic supermajority on the council. It's a rich democratic town -- conservative by some measures, liberal by most.

Tappen huh. well I was Dicken Devil and we kicked your butts in baseball throughout the 70's. :) It is democratic but people, at least those whom live there for more then 4 years, are conservitive in there general outlook. Many do not want things to change and many want change to fit better economic growth. Do not get me wrong, it has a large liberal label but most who i knew and know are conservitive in there politic.
