eh, pyramids, castles...whatever you want, we can build. : >

maybe a little castle-ette on top of a building here would be nice, but you have to have tapestries to go on the walls, otherwise you've got nothing.

We have a castle near us. It was built by a man for his new bride, but she divorced him before it was finished. Recently it had an run in with a fire breathing dragon.

How ironic is it that a castle with a huge perimeter wall and four guard towers was leveled by an arsonist because one of the two entry gates was unlocked?

It's like a parable for internet security...

Looking through that site I noticed that this ruined castle on the Hudson River, which I used to see from the train window riding from Manhattan to Poughkeepsie, opened to the public, finally, a month and a half ago.

One would think people selling such expensive luxuries would hire someone other than their niece's boyfriend to design their websites. But then again, maybe they are not selling anything but just trying to.

tomplus2: Recently it had an run in with a fire breathing dragon.

I, too, live near the Versailles "castle" and I always loved driving by and wondering what on earth possessed those people to build it. I am sad that it is now burnt to pieces...

But I'm certainly not sad for the new owners who will probably be charged with insurance fraud...

Hehehe.

It is amusing the romance and what passes for a "castle" these days, how little people know of the actual history of castles. Certain design choices automatically qualify as castle: stone and turrets seem to be enough in most cases. Real castles, which went out of style in the 14th Century have stone walls 15 to 20 feet thick. The living conditions were horrendously uncomfortable the nobles were more than happy to leave their isolated and cold prisons for more hospitable surroundings when given the opportunity. They would certainly look on in amusement at future generations romantic notions of the castle as we might be surprised at a future generations romantic appeal with the big-box Wallmart.
