This exact thing was posted this spring. Only it was a different URL. I spent a whole night refreshing this instead of writing an essay. posted by SoftRain at 9:20 PM on August 7, 2004
yeah, I had an install of it running on my site for a while. posted by angry modem at 9:31 PM on August 7, 2004
that 'stuff' link above is this kid who would show up every now and then on Comedy Central's The Man Show. they would send the kid around college campuses to approach women and ask them out on dates...usually with some cheesy, dirty pick-up line.
of course, this was back when TMS was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and Adam Carolla. posted by NationalKato at 10:12 PM on August 7, 2004
Thank you for making that statement, Dreama. I noticed a serious spike in my bandwidth usage last month, and lo and behold the cause was me posting some pics at Livejournal (hosting them on my domain), and them getting snagged by many pages like this ... and then people stealing them off of there and hot linking them (to post them in their own Livejournals, to get snagged again by these pages, and stolen by yet more people to infinity). I am not happy about these LJ image "collectors". There are way too many of them out there. posted by Orb at 3:10 AM on August 8, 2004
LJ users won't think it's the "wrong" thing to do as long as the FAQ instructs on how to do it, somewhere in there it might be good to clarify "can't be just any old server and image, it has to be yours, mmmmkay?". Or just explain why people with their own servers (and images) aren't too happy about bandwidth theft... posted by dabitch at 4:16 AM on August 8, 2004
A week (or two) ago I came across some instructions on how to set your LiveJournal account to avoid the LJ image stealer. So far it seems to have worked. posted by miftik at 6:36 AM on August 8, 2004
I've had this script running on my own site for my own use since the link was first posted here. I look at it a few times throughout each day, and the results really are quite interesting.
The majority of the images are quiz results and teenage girls posting pictures of themselves or their friends. I've gotten 2 goatse and 1 tubgirl so far, and a few other disturbing images. But every once in a while you get lucky and hit on something really interesting. posted by sinical at 8:10 AM on August 8, 2004
