This is a rather confusing incident. At first they're cheering him on and all, which is surprising given that he doesn't seem to speak English all that well and can't really sing. But then they sing along with chorus and that just blows my mind.

Its a farce. He's a character. The actor/comedian who portrays Borak, Sacha Baron-Cohen, in fact speaks a beautifully even and easy English. He is also Jewish. Its like how black people are allowed to use the n-word, ya know? Um, we know. It's not Borat's antics - it's the enthusiastic joining in by the audience that rasies eyebrows. Borat (and SBC's other characters) are at their best when they've tricked someone else into exposing their racism. I LIKE YOU!!!!!!!!!

It keeps crapping out on me 3/4s of the way through. Also, maybe I'm misunderstanding... is this a skit? Meaning, are the members of the audience part of the performance? Cause when I read the post I thought that it was saying this guy was performing and these ~~rednecks~~ people were entusiastically singing along. But when I watch the clip it seems entirely staged as if it's really just a tv show (or whatever it is) making fun of ~~people~~ rednecks and country music. Not that I really care either way. It's funny. I just think that those people are way too unaware of the camera for this to be real (ie. they're not self conscious in the least, which I find strange).

I got the impression that it wasn't staged-- which is part of what makes it so surreal. If it is staged, they do a damn good job-- frankly, I could believe a redneck bar getting so into the song "Throw the Jew Down the Well" that they stop being so self-conscious of the camera. That's the frightening part.

sorry to be an everlasting snark, but this is hardly funny or revealing any "redneck" prejudice (nevermind the offensiveness of the word redneck). it's extremely cheap humor. he gets drunken people to sing along with a seemingly harmless song, then throws in the Jew stuff halfway through. i counted maybe four people who really got into it (red-white striped guy, asian-looking woman making the horns, the drunk white chick, and the confused woman with glasses). the rest of the patrons actually looked offended, or more likely, aware that it was a big fat joke (based on the camera crew filming an untalented singer). four anti-semites in a country bar that crowded is way better than i expected. it sorta even brightened my day. so thanks for that. i must be one of the only people who doesn't find Cohen funny at all. he was a one-joke pony, now he's a three-joke pony. Borat does this casual anti-semite baiting in every skit. zzzzzzzzzz.

I think it's edited highlights of the HBO series.

This really made me chuckle. It reminded me, though, of the original: Kinky Friedman (who, incidentally, is running for governor of Texas). If you want to see the epitome of the intersection of Jewish humor and country music, one needs to look no further than inimitable Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys. During the 70's and 80's the Texas Jewboys challenged the notion that country music was only for rednecks with their own brand of humor in songs like "Ride 'em Jewboy," "High on Jesus," and "The First Jewish Justice of the Peace." The pinnacle of which was "They Ain't Makin' Jews Like Jesus Anymore". Well, a redneck nerd in a bowling shirt was a-guzzlin' Lone Star beer Talking religion and-uh politics for all the world to hear. "They oughta send you back to Russia, boy, or New York City one You just want to doodle a Christian girl and you killed God's only son." I, for one, am amazed that the Ali G humour has spread across the Atlantic. After all, it's a fairly narrow section of British society that he's lampooning. That said, this clip is pretty scary. I have no doubt that it was not staged. I'm also sure there was plenty of goings on earlier to put the audience at ease in the presence of the cameras. Just goes to show, in an alternate universe, the Nazis didn't necessarily have to come from Germany. AiiI!

I, for one, am amazed that the Ali G humour has spread across the Atlantic. After all, it's a fairly narrow section of British society that he's lampooning. The humor is really found in people's reactions to him, instead of in the caricature. Certainly, the Ali G. character is funny too, but he's a much smaller part of it than the people who are being interviewed. And we have a similar section of society that's very analogous, anyway. Borat is more stand-alone funny than Ali G., but it's still very dependant on reactions.

I was curious as to whether it was a tv show making fun of c+w people or c+w people digging their own hole. Kinky Friedman (who, incidentally, is running for governor of Texas). WTF? I thought Friedman died in the mid-90s. I'd swear I read multiple articles about it. Did he fake his own death or pull some hoax or something? I'm stunned to find out he's still alive!

dobbs, He is alive and kicking. He writes the back page article in Texas Monthly, and it is almost uniformly ~~good~~ great. He also was recently on a book tour for his latest book. He is an excellent writer of local color and humor. Reminds me of John Kennedy O'Toole. But, yes, if you check out his website, he is running for governor. Of course, I think it is just a halfass move.

Man points out some renecks may be anti-semetic. Film at eleven. Coming up, the Klan may not like black people. Seriously, SBC (as we like to refer to him in Kilburn) is great when he skewers those in power (see his wonderful skit with those in Northern Ireland), but this is just cheap. Getting slightly right wing drunk males to sing along with anti semetic lyrics reveals what exactly? That a bar has idiots in it? Do it on someone who has some power and it has a point, these people are just deluded saps and he gets them to perform like seals. It tells me nothing about America. His interviews with politicians however speaks volumes about those who stand for office.
