What's the difference between an operating system and a user interface? If you're the San Francisco Chronicle, they're the same thing.

what's the difference between the media's ass and a hole in the ground? the other day i read an article on a news site badmouthing the new WinDoze firewall because it does not block unapproved outbound traffic. about ten minutes later i read an article in a national newspaper which claimed the firewalls new ability to block unauthorized outbound traffic would be confusing to users. since when have you ever expected any pundit to know anything?

What's the difference between trashing a huge abstraction like "the media" as a single imaginary entity and declaring that "black folks have rhythm"? Answer: one seems hip, and one doesn't.

In an age where there's so much bad, corporate-owned media, learning to tell the difference between smart reporters and idiot spin-meisters is more important, not less.

more often than not, news media of any and all stripes reports totally erroneous hogshit or industry-asskissing propoganda when it comes to tech.

more often than not, black folk have a finely-honed sense of rhythm.

in an age where there's so much ignorance in the typical information consumer, learning to scorn lousy sources en masse is more important, not less.

more succinctly: a few nuggets of gold in a river of shit do not alter the river of shit.

The funny thing is that Pixo wrote neither the OS nor the UI for the iPod. Portal Player wrote the OS, Apple wrote the UI, and Pixo wrote the libraries and the API toolkit.

However, for embedded devices, the UI may often be so tightly integrated into the OS that it's rather pointless to separate the two. iPod is not such a case.

More often than not, its better to just not say anything. Unbelievable. Is it 1804 or 2004?

learning to scorn lousy sources en masse is more important, not less ... a few nuggets of gold in a river of shit do not alter the river of shit.

Shitting in the river yourself doesn't make the situation any better, either. Fishing out the nuggets does. Blanket criticisms of that great boogeyman "The Media" are easy, and also boring.

So JJG and Quonsar why don't YOU just be the expert on everything in 20 different fields?

I cover government and politics in a small town. I'm expected to know everything from local political connections, to state bills in the legislature, to how a power plant operates (the city owns one) to how a road department might go about constructing a city street. Oh, and I have to analyze multimillion dollar budgets, manage on a tight deadline, and communicate this all to the people who put it in the newspaper, hoping they don't screw up my story with a poor headline or edit a sentence so it's incorrect.

And I get paid $25k for this.

I'm glad you're able to pick out a reporter's mistakes. I don't see how that's an FPP. Whatever. I don't see how they get anybody good in the media. It doesn't pay enough, and you have to rely on passion to get by, in spite of assholes like you, who give them zero respect. I fail to have much passion for an occupation that people respect less than selling used cars.

San Francisco isn't really a small town, but that doesn't affect my main point, which is: what the hell is this post about?

Just remember, fishing in a river of shit is worth it if you scrounge up a few golden nuggets.

This post is about how to make a terrible FPP, DrJohn - I thought that was obvious.

Has anyone thought to contact the reporter about the error?

Maybe it would help if you all think of reporters' brains as open source code that relies on bug reports and code contributions from users for improved functionality and stability.

Or you could just complain. (Although the complaints about the shitty FPP, I agree with.)
