It's a battle of the Baldwins

The upcoming entertainment lineup for the GOP convention next week is mostly country music, but this article mentions that Stephen Baldwin will be there. Yep, you heard me, a Baldwin. Alec Baldwin was at the DNC last month, and now it's brother vs. brother, Baldwin vs. Baldwin. Remember when you're voting this fall that it's basically a best of the Baldwins contest. You either like Alec, or Stephen, but not both. Now choose your poison Baldwin. [via devoter]

Personally, my nod's going to Alec, for his work in Glengarry Glen Ross over Stephen's work in The Usual Suspects. It was close, but Alec edged him out.

A couple of days ago I posited a hypothetical race between William Wallace and Gandhi -- how would it pan out in the US?

Now I've realized that Mel Gibson would probably beat out Ben Kingsley. I mean, sure, Kingsley has some real critical acclaim and fans, but nothing compared to Gibson's popular appeal.

That's all.

Stephen is on the Fox News morning show all the time talking about his born-again christian escapades and some kind of jesus coffee drink or something? I dunno. The host chick called him Billy once, around the third time I'd seen him on the show. That family is something else.

Now choose your poison Baldwin Reagan.

What? Canada hasn't bombed the Baldwins out of existence yet? Oh well.

Alice Cooper, Bruce Springsteen, Kurt Vonnegut ... its all too much! Seriously, what would Brian Boitano do?

People for the Ethical Treatment of Alec Baldwin (PETAB) vs. Stephen Baldwin, Celebrity Mole ("Obviously, it's the kind of reality that [sic] anything is possible.")

My favorite Baldwin is Daniel because of Homicide: Life on the Street, which can do no wrong. Other than that, I guess I'm for Alec. Who is Stephen B.? heh

Did you read that Kurt Vonnegut link? Am I supposed to interpret that as support for Bush?
But really, if they've got Foghat on board, I may as well book my one way flight to France right now.

a Republican Baldwin is a little bit like Aimee Mann covering Coldplay -- a genuinely 'wtf?' moment

I hear the really major entertainment at the GOP convention will be the large influx of prostitutes to NYC.

Gonna have a morality party!

Amen. Tell me who Yaphet Kotto is endorsing for president and that'll decide my vote.

No, quite the opposite as a matter of fact. Did I imply otherwise?

ALL the Baldwins are
endorsing candidates?

First that bastard Stephen took something so pure, so good, and so holy, and turned it upside down, kicked it in the stomach, and shat on it in the most horrific display of acting seen since the beginning of time, and now he's going to be at the RNC?
posted by adampsyche at 10:32 AM on August 24, 2004

Stephen's probably just going because he knows the GOP's got some deep connections to the Columbian drug lords and they'll have some very high quality flake to enjoy.

That and the GOP springs for hookers at their conventions and that's what makes them better than Democratic conventions.

I have personally met Stephen Baldwin and his wife. Both really nice people. I talked to his wife at length and she is a real sweetheart.

Yep, he's born again, and the real deal.

Isn't that an oxymoron?
posted by terrapin at 12:10 PM on August 24, 2004

No. I meant that he was genuinely walking with the Lord.

He has been to my church(as a speaker) twice and is a friend of one of my pastors.

Now, now, don't make fun of konolia. I've never met a Baldwin myself, although I did meet Maureen Reagan back when I was in the radio biz, and the King Sisters actually sang a silly song parody I wrote, and in junior high I was beat up by a school bully who was the son of a famous TV host.

And Robin Williams once mistook me for a dead gay tennis player (I was wearing a white cable-knit sweater).

You can tell that after a brief meeting? I know some hotel managers in Mexico who would beg to differ :)

I am willing to bet that the good people of Lisbon don't even know the difference between Alec and Stephen Baldwin. Please be more considerate of our irmãos e irmãs portuguese next time you make a front page post, Mr. Howie.

So I'm guessing he was in Threesome before he learned to walk with Jesus? And with 'family values Republicans'?
posted by stonerose at 3:25 PM on August 24, 2004

He has only been a Christian about three years. And he does not take the same types of roles he once did.

This is part of what he's been up to lately.
posted by konolia at 7:14 PM on August 24, 2004

I actually entered some data on Foghat at work the other day. I think they have maybe one original member left. So their supposed endorsement dosen't carry much weight with this ex-mullethead.

OK. So most talented artists are left-of-center. So what?
posted by ParisParamus at 7:19 PM on August 24, 2004

Well, most untalented artists are left-of-center, too. And plenty of leftists have bad taste in artists. This can make both the arts scene and the left a somewhat tedious place on occasion.
posted by jonmc at 7:35 PM on August 24, 2004

And there's some talented conservative artists: Charlie Daniels, for instance. Politically, he's a lunkhead, but he's a hell of a fiddle player, and "Trudy" and "Devil Went Down To Georgia" are still great songs. You could say the same about Ted Nugent and Alice Cooper. They've made some dumbass political statements but that dosen't mean you can have my copies of Scream Dream and Billion Dollar Babies. There's Johnny Ramone, too. And even Dylan, in his Bob The baptist period evinced some conservative views. Politics can't ruin good tunes for me.

Konolia's Christian Scorecard so far:

Bill Moyers, with a Master's in Theology: Not an authority on the matter...just because you've been to seminary doesn't mean you know the lord.

Stephen Baldwin: Genuinely walking with the Lord

Quite frankly, you're god is confusing.

nofundy: listen to his instrumental stuff with Mark O'Connor or even his redneck/hippie anthem "Uneasy Rider" and put your politics aside. Trust me, the cat's got talent.

And add Sammy Hagar, and Stan Lee from the Dickies to the list of talented conservatives.

Sammy's a dolt but "Give To Live" is a killer song.
