I think that site is the most cynical thing i have ever seen; taunting both joy and grief. I thought it was funny at first, but then I realized that, apparently, emotion is not accepted as a valid part of masculinity. Thus, I promptly disregarded my thoughts on the matter and, reverting to base instinct, took off my pants and ordered the woman to get me another beer.

sciurus - on what basis do you conclude it's taunting? Whatever the site's owner thinks, she or he doesn't make it obvious - and I find it hard to believe that someone honestly thinks the pictures of a man weeping over the body of his dead daughter is hilarious. It's just a website with pictures of men (as dhoyt says, the old thing is something of a misnomer) weeping. Sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar.

on what basis do you conclude it's taunting? Stuff like: "a sometimes scary and unsettling sorrow often disproportionate to the event." and links to "Sensitive Men with Facial Hair Crying" somehow don't make me think that this is an earnest attempt to laud men for showing emotion.

So? In America especially, it is often scary and unsettling to see men crying. A friend of mine almost (but not quite!) lost it in my presence after a breakup a while ago, and I was freaked out. I was scared! And unsettled! And personally, I think any crying over a pro sports loss is disproportionate to the event. Lastly(!). I don't think it's an attempt to laud men for showing emotion, either. It's an attempt to... amass a large collection of instances of men crying. Neither laudatory nor condemnatory (is that a word?). It just is what it is. Chillax, son.

I'm not angry or offended, I just don't think it is funny. Perhaps my assumption that it was meant to be funny is off base, but judging from the mail the site has received I'm not the only one to reach that conclusion. Perhaps if it stated that the site was intended as an objective examination of men crying, then there would be no confusion. In any case, my defensive assumption that it was humorous merely points out that 'crying men' is a touchy subject and should be addressed with little to no ambiguity. [or am i assuming things again?] I think any crying over a pro sports loss is disproportionate to the event. Not if it is a big game and you are on the team. Otherwise, I agree.

Fair enough. Perhaps their forums have good discussions going on; too bad you have to register to even get a view of the threads. As it stands, I still feel that the sitemaker should be a bit more explicit with the aims. It is in this spirit that we at oldmencrying.com are working to amass the largest collection of images, audio and video files, and narrative accounts of weeping men ever assembled. is pretty explicit, but since it is surrounded by plenty of vaguely insincere sincerity I tend to doubt the motive.

There is a Dr. William Frey who has done research on crying and found that emotional tears (as opposed to onion/smoke/etc.-induced tears) "contain more proteins - complex elemental substances that include essential compounds such as enzymes or hormones". From this article:

"Frey was able to isolate in emotional tears the hormone prolactin, which is released by the pituitary gland at times of intense emotion or stress and makes its way to the lachrymal (or tear) glands. Too much prolactin in your system can become toxic, so crying is a way of cleansing the body of this during stress."
