Yes, back in the 70s it was all right to say this to unsuspecting strangers here in the US. We live in different times now, but the product is once again available, imported from the Phillipines by The Vermont Country Store, also selling all manner of odd products from yesteryear. The Vermont Country Store kicks ass for random wierdness. Its like an old general store in catalog form. And no, I'm not just saying I like it because I grew up in Vermont. Thanks for reminding me of this excellent resource for hard to find goodies from back east!

Oh fuck! My dad had packs of both blackjack and clove gum maybe 8 or 9 years ago and gave me a pack of each which lasted less than a day. Awesome! but a friend says dismissively: it's not all that rare.

WTF? The lobby shop in my building at work has Clove gum. And you can get Bit-O-Honey just about anywhere, along with Charms pops, Charms in a can, Bounty bars, U-NO, Necco wafers, and Sugar Daddies. Have you people no Walgreen's, no grocery stores? Pretty much apart from the shit I've never heard of in the first place, these guys aren't selling any hard to find candy. Where the hell is this stuff rare, the moon?

I don't think all their stuff is hard to find, but it's still a great resource for certain oddball things. My Walgreen's doesn't have Walnettos, for example.

I think you can still by Coke syrup at grocery stores and Wal-Marts, too. My mom has always had a bottle of the stuff in a medicine cabinet. It works.

I've been looking for Clove gum in every mom-and-pop store and immigrant grocery in the DC area (plus parts of PA). I found some in a 7-11 in Bailey's Crossroads once, and bought them out, but never came across it again. *shrug* Guess I'm just a provincial hillbilly or something.

Coincidentally, my wife and I were looking through one of their catalogues last night. We found it pretty amusing, and determined that this is where old people get new versions of horribly out of date things, like bathing caps covered in plastic flowers, bad clothes and uncomfortable bedsheets. The best product was on the back of the catalogue: Horlicks malted milk tablets. It took a more innocent time than ours for a company named Horlicks to survive... and to have anything called a 'tablet' be considered a treat rather than a laxative.
