They're really pretty and all.... it's just that... well, you know. *cues beat* "If it's not too complex/tell me how many Africans died for the baguettes on your Rolex."
I don't think that this is a bad post at all, and there is much to read there (and again, the pretty pretty pictures), I just can't think about diamonds outside of the political context anymore. Stupid lefty values. Sigh. posted by jokeefe at 4:37 PM on September 7, 2004
Wow. I am lost among the diamonds; their stories amaze me. Thanks for the post. [this is good] posted by Lynsey at 6:02 PM on September 7, 2004

For some related info, the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History has The Splendor of Diamonds (click on the stones to get their background), and the American Museum of Natural History has a great, great site called The Nature of Diamonds, with LOTS of info, covering history, mining and distribution, technology, and the jewels themselves, with multiple pages devoted to each topic.
The page "Caste, Color, & Buddhism" in the History section, for example, has some fascinating background on how different castes were only permitted to own diamonds of specific colors. posted by taz at 11:38 PM on September 7, 2004
