Oh, to be able to be a gadfly!

In the late 90s, I used to buy a magazine called Gadfly. They ceased publication in 2001. Today I found out that the editor has a blog and he appears to be republishing some of Gadfly's contents in an attempt to get people to buy back issues. Read interviews with George Plimpton, Emmylou Harris, Ben Marcus, and The Wachowskis. Don't like interviews? There's also articles on Lou Reed, Anais Nin, Brian Wilson, Jack Nitzsche, Lester Bangs, and people you may never have heard of. Their film coverage was also almost always interesting.

Thank you for this link! I was a huge Gadfly fan and I'm glad to see it's back, in some form anyway.

Never saw Gadfly but this is great, thanks. Love the Andrew Loog Oldham quote on Jack Nitzsche [emphasis mine]:

I heard that Neil Young turned up when he heard Jack had died. But he wasn’t there exactly out of compassion; he was looking to see if there were any tapes left in the house. That’s what I heard. I’m not saying it’s true, but he is a survivalist and a musician. It’s no different than a dog in a suit asking for a Scotch and toilet water. Common sense.

Scotch and toilet water...I have to use that line somehow.

I enjoyed the story about Brian Wilson, especially the part about what happened to his legendary sandbox. Quite a find, I can't recall seeing this on the newstand when it was published.

This story reminds me of another great magazine that I enjoyed but that closed its doors shortly after they started... Wigwag.

great stuff here. i like this bit with the Wachowski bros:

Gadfly: Listen, we think you made a great film and when you're rich and famous in about five years...

(laughter)
