Former rebelturned pillar of society Sir Peter Maxwell Davies turned 70 today. For those unfamiliar, his website has audio samples of his published works.

An Orkney Wedding, with Sunrise was performed the last night of the Proms in 1992. I watched it on the BBC from my aunt's house in Lancashire. Didn't know about him or the Proms before then. Favorably impressed. Bought some CDs. Included some of his music in our wedding.

Still didn't know a damned thing about him personally though. Thanks for this.

I'd second a recommendation of his work.

Farewell to Stromness is nice. It is also nice on guitar.
