doodlebug ... create and playback doodles, online. The doodle linked here is of Clint Eastwood (kinda). [note: flash] via j-walk

Yeah, good find. Dig the recent sketches of one mertyperty.

This is terrific! I've always had a thing for watching a drawing take shape, line by line.

(But if I weren't self-conscious about my lack of drawing ability before.....)

Interesting, but holy COW it's annoying the way it zooms in and out and wobbles while it's "redrawing" the image.

Very cool! The dynamic zooming during playback is particularly nifty.

The quality of some of the sketches, plus the way they play back (i.e. with no "mistakes") makes me think some must have been traced on a tablet...?

Yeah, gwint, I got the impression that the clint eastwood one, at least, looked like it was being traced.

This is pretty amazing: Hotchi - War Cockerel.

So, I looked up "hotchi war cockerel", and found this as a part of an excerpt from China Mieville's new "Iron Council":

At the hollow's edge a hotchi rider was watching them, astride his gallus. The big war-cockerel plumped its breastfeathers and raised one spurred claw-foot in curious pose. The hotchi, squat and tough hedgehog man, stroked his mount's red comb.

This kind of drawing isn't what I think of when I hear the word 'doodle' - I was expecting something more abstract, maybe, with less... direction.

I think it's evolved into something more elaborate than when they started. For example, one of the more highly rated members there submitted this for his first drawing. It's fairly loose, and very much like a doodle. Maybe more elaborate than what I might do while waiting on hold, but not much.

Now, this same artist is submitting stuff like this, and the war cockerel drawing that taz pointed to.

What am I watching on this site? Is this live? Was this recorded in real time? Some explanation?

Well, even though there's no explaination on the site, what you're seeing is a playback of the strokes people used to create the image. It's not in real time. I think it defaults to 2x, but you can bump it up to 5x or 10x.

And I think it could only be live if they had a room full of monkeys ... hm.. doodling internet monkeys. I think there may be profit in there somewhere.
