Well, so far, the gay marriages seem to be, statistically, much more successful than hetero marriages. Perhaps they should ban those if they want to preserve the sanctity of marriage.

"The world's first same-sex divorce"? I'm pretty sure there have been divorces of same-sex couples quite a while ago in the Netherlands and Belgium.

It is also oddly telling that the first day of national singles week is Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Ok, ok, so we let the gays get married. But who told them they could also get divorced?

I mean, next thing you know they'll be drinking from the same waterfountains and riding wherever the hell they want on the bus.

My family law professor pointed out that divorce is the number one benefit of marriage. There's quite a bit of truth to this -- having an independent forum to divide up messy property, custody, and income rights is critical, especially when one of the parties could be at a negotiating disadvantage. Good for that judge.

I'm going to my first gay wedding this weekend - the bride is American, and the...uh... bride is Canadian. They were told in no uncertain terms by a Canadian immigration case-officer that, now that they can get married, a failure to do so would be conspicuous during the adjudication of their application for landed immigrant status.

Now that we're starting to feel pressure to marry, gay divorce will slowly become more and more common on a per couple basis, I'm afraid.

This isn't the first gay divorce. Gay marriages has been legal in Denmark since 1989, and this article discuss the divorce rate compared to man-female marriages.

I like the typo in the first paragraph of the article that cx linked to--"In Denmark...it's a modem reality."

MeFi: Tracking Modem Realities Since Whenever.

Actually, cx, that's a fascinating article and I appreciate the link.

Stonerose, doesn't that seem fair, though? Unmarried heterosexual couples don't qualify for immigration exemptions in Canada--why should unmarried homosexual couples have more flexibility?
