Ceci Nes't Pas Une Satanic Message • "Years ago someone told me that if you played Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven song backwards that you could make out 'satanic messages'. It is not my opinion that Led Zeppelin and the other artists here were given some kind of evil power to make these backwards sounds have a satanic message. And, no, I did not create this to show the evils of Rock and Roll. Instead I made this flash piece for two reasons: 1. I was new to Flash and wanted to be better at it and 2. The reverse files sound cool. "

I hear that if you play Marilyn Manson backwards, it's all about kittens, rainbows, and unicorns.

Story:

When I was 13, I went to Lutheran summer camp. Each afternoon we'd have a religion class that was about 2 hours long. One of those days we were herded into the dining cabin and given a presentation, reel to reel included on backmasking.

Hair bands being all the rage those days, it was suggested we listen to Stryper instead of Whitesnake.

At 14, my high school boyfriend lent me 2 tapes. One of these was Led Zeppelin. I remember waiting until no one was home pop it in my cassette player. I was totally sweating it, knowing that God knew that I was committing a grevious sin. I think I may have repented for it later. It wasn't until I was 16 or 17 until I could listen to any LZ without a guilty conscience.

Note - this was all self inflicted. I was not raised by Jesus freaks.

The other tape he lent me was 2 Live Crew. I was able to listen to this without any issues.

I've occasionally wondered if Page and Plant weren't sitting around in the studio, recorded some Satanic lyrics for kicks, played 'em backwards, and then made up some lyrics to closely approximate the sound of the backwards lyrics. They were the sort of studio rats who might do such a thing.

In support of this:

a) Plant's inflections on that part of Stairway to Heaven are extremely bizarre - they're not the way you'd necessarily pick to sing those words.

b) Plant has steadfastly refused to explain where the lyrics to 'Stairway' come from.

c) Backwards masking was hardly unknown at the time, and other artists were using it - check out Jimi's 'Castles made of Sand' solo.

NOT in support of it:

a) It's completely ridiculous to hypothesize something this Byzantine when the least hypothesis is simply coincidence.
