<a href="http://www.iol.co.za/general/newsprint.php3?art_id=ct20001009212506212R100267">Rapist speechless after victim bites tongue</a> the victim "then ran off, tongue in mouth, to the nearest police station a kilometre away. Police were shocked when she produced the bitten-off tongue. Moments later, the suspect also arrived in agony, with blood pouring from his mouth, hoping to get medical help. He was immediately arrested. He received medical attention but it was not possible to have his tongue sewn back on. Police said the tongue would be kept and used as evidence."

I think this is funny (not the rape but the "punishment" inflicted upon the rapist). I expect the guy will never think about raping someone again. The thing I would like to now is, does this count as self-defense or could she be sued?

i'm kind of disgusted by this thread i started. it has so far been totally tasteless. this isn't really the funniest incident ever. i will quote some more of the article:

<i>The woman was in a state of shock and had clearly been in a struggle with the suspect, said [the] Superintendent of the police station. "<b>She displayed all the emotional signs of a rape victim and was given counselling</b>, [she is] a strong and powerful woman but much smaller than her attacker." she had been attacked as she made her way across open veld <b>to her home</b> at about 6pm on Saturday.</i>

Back 25 years ago, at the height of radical feminism, I remember reading a suggestion that someone made that a woman being raped should reach down and fondle the rapist's balls, and that he'd most likely let her. Then the recommendation was that she grab one of them and squeeze it with all her strength, crushing it.

The theory was that the pain (and I can't imagine it, myself, but it gives me the willies just thinking about it) would paralyze him long enough to let her get away. But it would also destroy that testicle and probably require surgical removal afterward.

As I've thought about that over the years, my feeling about that is that if you do that to him, you better kill him while he's paralyzed with the pain, for he will most certainly kill you once he recovers, if not in minutes then in months. As such it seems an extremely poor idea once you look past the first few minutes. Someone was thinking "revenge", not "survival", and survival in rape is by no means certain; rape followed by murder is not uncommon.

A woman I know was forced at gunpoint to commit fellatio on a man. In theory she could have bitten his prick off, but he probably would have shot her even despite the pain. Though I hate counselling "give in", it really did seem on retrospect like the best course of action and that's in fact what she did. (This was long before I knew her.) They eventually caught him and he's spending a long time behind bars now, but that doesn't remove the trauma suffered by that woman. She's damned lucky to have lived through it but not lucky to have experienced it; it's not something that should happen to anyone.

There are few crimes which inspire outright hatred in me for the perpetratrs. Rape and Arson both do, though. (I don't claim they have anything in common.)

- Palegirl -

Well, before this ends up in Metatalk... let me apologize now. A bunch of us guys saw the humor in a criminal getting what he deserves. No one here thought the rape itself was funny. I'm a husband and a father of four girls...

The fact that you put in the part about his tongue "being held" for evidence set the tone. I'll comment no more, now that I made that all clear.

Actually, remember that South Africa is now, as they say, under new management. They have a new constitution as of 1996 that guarantees basic human rights, including <a href="http://www.polity.org.za/govdocs/constitution/saconst02.html#35">rights of the accused</a> and arrested that will be largely familiar to any Westerner. So, yes, he does have the right to remain silent.

"I expect the guy will never think about raping someone again." -Jay-

Since rape is about anger and control, I imagine this guy will be more of a threat now than he was before. Hopefully, he'll go to prison for a long time....but someday he'll be out again and will no doubt be looking to exact some kind of revenge, if not on the actual woman who bit off his tongue, then on women in general.

"<i>Since rape is about anger and control, I imagine this guy will be more of a threat now than he was before</i>."

Good call. It's truly a shame, but the likelihood of his repeat attempt is most certainly something to anticipate; for, not only did this woman merely get him in trouble, she has given this man and his interpersonal relationships a constant reminder of his actions for years to come. While I applaud that, I hope it doesn't serve as inspiration to commit further acts of violence.

This man could take some personal initiative, and deal with the physical "scars" brought on by this event, but it is far more common that he will repeat a similar action to prove something to himself...or to women in general. I find that deplorable.

With as much initiative and strength that women possess in terms of addressing the scars brought on by sexual abuse, I cannot understand why men like this, and millions others, cannot harness that themselves and spawn positive experiences out of it, rather than terrible nightmares.

I hope he's away long enough for his anger and control issues to subside and be humbled by the incarceration experience.

If you are attacked ( wether the intention is rape or not ) why don't people use their fingers for self defense? A nice jab to the eyes ( with follow through ) will end that persons attack right then and there. Not only that but i'd like to see a blind person try and rape anyone. You cannot attack what you cannot see.
This technique is one of the first things my Tae Kwon Do instuctor told his class, simple but very effective.

Unfortunately, people aren't completely coherent during an attack. One important thing you also learn in martial arts is how to control both your anger and your body during high stress and dangerous situations. This is one of the most valuable weapons a person can possess, and one very difficult to master as well. A lot of people without formal training in self control in the midst of high risk situations end up in a state of panic and aren't able to rationalize the dos and don'ts of surviving an attack whilst enduring the physicalities and violence of the ocurring attack. Jabbing eyes or even retaliating in general is not something that is readily available in the mindset of someone overwhelmed with terror.
