I have attempted to portray the gross poverty of the dispossessed by inviting some of the homeless men on London's streets to display their belongings - those carried in their pockets, or in a bag."
[via nmazca.blog, who got it from ashleyb]

great post, thanks.

dear MeFi members and readers:
winter is coming. if you have a blanket you don't use much, please, please, please give it to a homeless person, or to a charity that helps them. winter is hell for those who live on the streets.
thank you very much

This reminds me of a short film I saw called 100 N.Y., N.Y. which was 100 homeless folks, each holding a number. Good stuff in both cases.

also, what matteo said.

One of the most interesting things I've seen on Metafilter for a long time. Will certainly make me buy the Big Issue more!

The elephant mascot is heart breaking. Someone who's life is shit
seems to be keeping an object bringing good luck -- there's
something very childish in that (I used to do it when I was a kid)
and then, if I was in the same kind of shit these people are, I'd
probably do it again.

Virgin Atlantic docket. A fateful lost connection? A fond memory? I'm curious.

I like the way seeing a homeless person's possessions - or lack of - compels more empathy and thought than most easily contrived "victim" photo of the man or woman ever could. It's blatantly manipulative but still raw and honest.

That said, this portrait (scroll right, second from end) had me staring for half an hour once.
