I know nothing about the sims.... how much of their behavior is determined when you set up the characters? Do they 'turn' gay, or were they made gay at the beginning?

cell divide: You assign a horoscope sign to your Sim. You can rearrange the resulting points which will change his/her horoscope accordingly. All Sims are naturally bisexual.

Actually, my comment was a bit misleading, ssmith. I have no plans of posting FPPs. I've seen too many people get ripped up for perfectly fine FPPs. (And Mefites wonder why more people don't post...) By the way, the author posted a "thank you" on my blog. She also has a journal at Livejournal.

Strictly speaking, all sims are the same gender. Distinctions are purely polygonal. That said: I find the Sims games incredibly boring. And what is up with bolding people's names. Seriously people, stop that. This is not a gossip column.

I had the Bush cabinet living together in the first Sims, back a couple years ago. Because Dick Cheney was so "mean," everyone kept moving out of the house in a huff -- particularly bitter was the dust-up between him and Colin Powell, who would hang around the house, unemployed and crying.

And what is up with bolding people's names. It seems to be the trend. And I'm all about being trendy, dontcha know. However, since it seems to offend kavasa, I'll cease and desist bolding names. deborah: Snarky MeFites aren't sitting in the room with you. They can't harm you. You're right, they cannot hurt me physically. However, when someone stomps (verbally, on the internet or whatever) all over something I think is cool it hurts my poor widdle emotions (whomever thunked up "sticks 'n' stones" can bite me). Constructive criticism is always welcome as is being silent when nothing nice can be said. Tlogmer, please link to the essay, I'd love to read it.

Sims 1 also has completely flexible orientation, but there is a recognition of gender. For instance, same sex couples "move in" together rather than getting married (will they change this in the Canadian version?), and don't have babies on their own - they have to wait for the adoption agency to call. But in terms of establishing relationships, yes, they are all bisexual. (My first sim neighbourhood had a lesbian couple and a gay couple, each with one child, and one insanely huge family of two couples and four children. But the new house just has lots and lots of love triangles - I was getting bored of being nice.) Sims 1 doesn't have any wants, though (other than hunger, etc), so the article must be just about Sims 2. I did laugh out loud reading this, but was also thinking much of the time: "Ah, so this is what Sims 2 is like."

jb: I'm not sure what you mean by the Canadian version. I'm in Canada and play the same version as USians. In Sims1 male and female Sims could officially marry, but you could have same-sex Sims shack-up. In Sims2 Sims of either sex can marry either sex, or live in sin if you prefer. And like "real life" same-sex couples can't have babies of their own making. However, you can adopt (as mentioned) or, if female, have a ..um.. sperm donor. Just watch out for the jealousy factor. Male Sims can also give birth, but only after being abducted and impregnated by an alien. Yes, really. amberglow: I frequent the main Sims newsgroup. Players have mentioned that no matter how they try, there are some Sims that refuse to have relationships with their opposite sex (100% gay). No one has mentioned it, but I'm sure there are Sims that refuse to have relationships with their own sex (100% hetero). Generally speaking though, Sims are happy to "woohoo" with either sex. Tlogmer: thanks for posting that. I've wondered now and again if the future will have a meld of Sims, the internet and virtual reality.

Am I the only person sick of gay jokes? I used to watch Conan O'Brien until half his schtick was either homos or hitler. Eventually he did a gag involving a gay hitler. I don't think I've watched since.

I go through spurts with the Sims. I get all caught up in it, design these elaborate scenarios...and then get bored having to micromanage their potty needs. That said, I have a Grant, Lee, Lincoln, Crazy Mary Todd house that's great fun. Snarky MeFites aren't sitting in the room with you. They can't harm you. Ha! Fear me and my rapier wit, able to cross time, space, and the internets!

deborah - I was just joking that now, since gay marriage is legal in Ontario, B.C. and Yukon, Sims would have to change the options, to make a "Canadian" pro-gay marriage version. It sounds like they already have in Sims 2. I wonder whether it is that there are Sims that are all gay or all straight - I've never noticed that in Sims1, but maybe it is there in Sims2. But I think that personality might be the factor - some Sims just will not like another, because they are too different.

Drats...I meant to add: Tracy, we should create a modding area and swap mefi sims. ;) i'd be afraid of some of the real mefites seeing my mefi sims and being insulted by my execution of their looks, eek :-D
