papercake: +1

if this is supposed to be dumb, fine. If it's the most recent from a genius seen here before (or whatever), some background would be helpful, even if it made your post less mysterious.

When I was a kid, my brother used to love to tell me this joke.

Q: Why can't the Queen Mary fit in Times Square?
A: Because ice cream has no bones.

I have an idea that this is on a similar order of sensibility...

I get it. It's a metaphor for what would happen if you dropped the statue of liberty off the top of a building over and over and over and over but it never hit the ground.

And the moral of the story is:

1) Don't be careful what you wish for, cuz you won't be gettin' it anywho.
2) You can't always get what you want but if you try sometimes you just might find you get what you'll need.
3) It's shitty animation on the Web for free. What'd you expect? An Oscar winner?
4) How many surrealists does it take to change a light bulb? The fisssshhhh!

Is this like the plastic bag short from American Beauty?

If so it should be followed up with bewbies just like that was. That would make it so much more than just bad animation.

Don't you guys get it?

wow, they don't... between this and the super easy trick donkeys puzzle i'm getting the idea the mefi's collective iq has taken a major nose dive recently. i'm blaming it on the american election.

i liked the crapiness of the animation.

Confession: I didn't really get it either.

... i'm getting the idea the mefi's collective iq has taken a major nose dive recently.

FWIW, I don't get it. I also find the vast majority of logic puzzles hopelessly tedious, crosswords annoying, chess boring -- well, games, in general, boring -- and after doing something like the donkeys puzzle, I keep thinking I could have been doing something much more interesting. Like stare into space and think. I see something like this, I keep looking for a pun; not finding one, I lose interest. Failings such as this have always marked me as an outcast in clever society, despite my outrageously good performance on standardized tests.

So, save us the further annoyance and spoiler the damn thing already. Assuming there actually is a point, and this isn't just a wank-job to see how many people can be convinced that there's a point...

Oh, now that's disgusting! Whaddya mean 'sfw'? Jeezus! Sick bastards.

Nice music though.

Zach already spoiled it--i don't know about iq, but reading comprehension is way down.
posted by amberglow at 2:14 PM on November 1, 2004

OK, if you say so. But why did we have to waste 15 seconds worth of time and effort to get those messages?
posted by lodurr at 2:23 PM on November 1, 2004

Like Zach's view here which made better sense than mine.
1 beautiful dog – desk, like a dog has four legs.
2 leather tennis shoes - wheelchair, the seat and back support is made of leather.
3 grow hair back - light, which makes things grow.

Base surrealism or, in the case of thom's suggestions, insightless analogy, are empty of wit, cleverness, or anything similar. Farside cartoons are funny because they make sense. I have a suspicion the objects make sense because yeah, there are certain similarities, but I am hoping it isn't as superficial as "SAME NUMBER OF LEGS GET IT!?? LOL!!" So laims of intellectual and cultural superiority on that basis seem a little thin.

Cute... thingy, though.

might find you get what you'll need.
The three wishes have a lesser life expectancy than the three items given.

Wow. Tough crowd.

Hey, you know: I don't need to post things to Metafilter. I have two chinchillas in heat at home.

I find it sad when people can't enjoy things they don't understand.
posted by VanRoosta at 3:24 PM on November 1, 2004

I find it sad when a person feels compelled to find sadness in the "failure" of others to understand something he thinks is clever.

FWIW: I do understand it. I did understand it. I just figured there had to be more to it than that. Frankly, I liked it better when I thought I didn't understand it.

I liked it in an immediate kind of way. It didn't even occur to me, partially because of the cutesy style, that there was something to understand or get until all y'all started carping about how you didn't get it.

If there really is something to get I still don't, but I still like it.
posted by kenko at 4:05 PM on November 1, 2004

Desk has same number of legs as a dog? Y'all are reading WAY too much into this.

Awhile back there was some really bad animation thing which consisted of a series of vignettes where stick figures blew up. It was cheesy. It was terrible. It made absolutely no sense. It was funnier than a candy bar floating in a public pool. I loved it. I can't remember if I got the link from a thread in MeFi or not, but I guess this proves that those who can't laugh, critique. *shrug*

Okay, I got it:

1) You want a beautiful dog? Hide your old mutt under a desk.
2) You want stylish shoes? Try riding in a wheelchair.
Your arms might get tired, but you won't wear the shoes down.
3) The first wish involved a dog, remember?

My favorite gag in this vein is the one about the drunk guy who finds a lamp while staggering home. He rubs it, a djinn appears, says in return for being set free only one wish - any wish - may be granted.

As the drunk guy's a bit out of it, he asks the djinn to repeat what was just said. The djinn obliges, and the drunk shakes his head in disbelief. "It's true", the djinn insists. "I can grant you anything within your heart's desire, but only in the form of one wish. Be sure to use it wisely."

The drunk guy stumbles, slightly, then fatefully remarks, "You're gonna give me a free wish?
Get the fuck outta here!"

The music reminded me of the music from "The Good, Bad, & Ugly," I think the scene when Blondie gives the dying kid a smoke and then covers him.

Critique? I was just saying what I saw that made the clip worth it. For me, the desk representing a dog was a howl.

You know, I didn't "get it" but I kind of thought it was cute, until some of you told me I was stupid and bourgeois for not thinking it was the most brilliant thing ever. Now I've changed my mind, and I think it's extra dumb.

Do you think you could be a tad more patronizing, hmm? Or, perhaps, that you could work just a little harder to demonstrate Hildago's point?

Surely it is that piece, is it not? My favourite bit of this animation.
