Seattle's The Stranger reviews 2004's Scariest Halloween Costumes. And as a post on Slapnose explains, readers are none too pleased. Full disclosure: Slapnose's author is The Stranger's online editor and an old college friend of mine.

i admit, i first reacted with laughter. but as someone who has made two films with child/adolescent protagonists, i do wonder how they explained the concept behind these costumes to the kids involved, never mind how they explained it to their parents.

Discussed previously.

I also have a friend on the inside at The Stranger, and from what I have heard I don't think they're drowning in negative reactions over there.

Gaaaaaaaaaaah. My first double post. Shit. Sorry. I'm behind on my MeFi reading.

I think the Slapnose link is new. The Nancy Reagan comment in that certainly confirms my distaste for the whole thing. More proof if anyone needed it that assholes come in all persuasions.

I would think that, as usual, 'readers' in the sense of the majority of the Strangers loyal readership, are very hard to offend, while there are bound to be a few people from some rural area offended with each issue that happens to get carried out of seattle on a bus or something.

Fuck that. The scariest costume is dressing up a seven-year-old like the grim reaper and using them as a campaign tool.

Waaaa Kerry mentioned our *shhhhhgayshhhh* daughter. Waaa. Kerry is a bad man. By the way, here's our granddaughter dressed up like death. Photo op!

This is nothing. A few years ago The Stranger did an entire issue on meat, how to kill your own meat, and how great it was to eat meat. As a vegetarian, I completely loved it. Nothing better than an entire newspaper dedicated to pissing off the self-righteous. They got many, many death threats out of that one.

The funniest one I thought was the Nancy Regan one... I was seriously expecting a zombie Ronald Regan. But then again I'm the same one who uses The Onion's "Nancy Regan is single again" line way too often.
