Reading through posts in another thread this morning, it occurred to me: What infuriates the haters on the right wing so much is not that people on the "left" have been mocking them -- it's that they've been doing it well. This is a perfect example fo the kind of stuff that liberal satirists typically do so much better than conservative satirists. (And no, it's not a contradiction -- it's just that it's rare to see it done well, anymore.) TRANSLATION: Funny as hell. It would probably be even funnier if I had any sense at all for what Pete Coors is like.

Another thing that has always irked me about the Coors' ad campaign is "Those Twins!". The implication, of course, is that the guy would like to have sex with both of them--presumably at the same time. Isn't incest something that tends to be frowned upon in conservative circles (note, I'm not talking about Bush-esque, blue-blood inbreeding--that's different).

? Might you tell the children that sometimes life is just about drinking beer and having anonymous sex without any strings attached? This satirical bit is timely-- Coors is still a Republican and his beer ads are still running. I feel like this (unholy) alliance between the Christian Right and The Conservative, pro-business Right huddling together under the republican umbrella is an explosion waiting to happen. You have the abstinence-only-before-marriage crowd who faint at the sight of Janet Jackson's nipple vs. the drunken frat boy crowd. Actually, come to think of it, Bush is the perfect leader for them. A drunken frat boy who is born again.

In half seriousness, this piece really does a great job of baring the intertwingledness of Moralism and Hedonism. One can't really thrive without the other to play off against, and the great insight of characters like Murdoch is that they can make money by targeting the dualing Moralist and Hedonis in the individual members of their own audience. It's certainly not a new insight; preachers and con men have been exploiting it as long as there have been preachers and con men.

What Secret Life of Gravy said. Red America, land of "moral values," is as beer-sodden, materialistic (SUV's), Britneyized (tanning salons) as anywhere in the country. "Moral values" comes to this:

(in the words of a church bulletin insert I was reading earlier today) Homosexuals are pedophiles who want to redefine the American notion of family to equal group sex.
(in the words of the well-disseminated Voter's Guide for Serious Catholics) You may not remember the part of the Sermon on the Mount that brought up The Gays, but making sure they don't enter into a legal relationship is "non-negotiable" for Christians in a way that feeding the hungry and coming to the aid of the widow just ain't.

Meanwhile, actually try to confront public or private life with some of those weighty ethical demands (feed the hungry, etc.), and you're some kind of preachy UN-pinko crank, out of touch with "our values." Frankly, I don't believe there is a coherent set of "moral values," and most certainly not a Christian one, that would not be betrayed by a vote for Bush. OK, thanks guys, I got my post-election rant out.
