Aung San Suu Kyi's house arrest has been extended. The leader of Burma's democracy movement and a Nobel laureate, Suu Kyi was arrested a year and a half ago after her motorcade was attacked. Many prisoners in Burma (a.k.a. Myanmar) were recently released, but this is widely seen as a political ploy. [More inside]

They really don't know what to do with her do they? Bunch of corrupt, spineless bullies. Do they still call themselves SLORC? I always thought that word sounded right for an unelected, stupid and violent junta. SLORC - slips off the tongue but ends with a kind of dull thud, like a punch to the kidneys.

This follows a power shift in which the former prime minister was ousted and replaced by the hardliner general who is suspected of having orchestrated the attack on Suu Kyi and her arrest. Meanwhile, Burma's neighbor India is playing ball with the junta. Burma is scheduled to take over as chairman of ASEAN in 2006. Some members object, but the organization has refused to censure Burma over human rights abuses.

They really don't know what to do with her do they? They don't seem to. When they released her last time they didn't expect her to still be so popular with the public. They just don't get it. I'm amazed that they haven't killed her, but they just don't dare.

I was in northern Thailand a few years ago and considered taking a side trip into Burma. While in Chaing Mai, several fellow backpackers told me about travelling through Burma from India, and how incredibly warm the people were. Great flash link.
