Another damn list

If you had to pick your 5 Favorite web sites......what would they be? Yeah, it's the end of the year and we're all list-happy! Professor Barnhardt's Journal asked writers like Joel Stein, Dan Radosh and Rob Walker and bloggers what their favorite sites are. Sadly, not one mention of Metafilter!

Sadly, not one mention of Metafilter!

All right, I'll mention it. "Metafilter is my favorite web site." Signed, me.

Nothing on any of those lists that would make it onto a "favorites" list, either by dint of frequency or preference. But then, fave is such an elusive thing. I couldn't even tell you my favorite movie, let alone website.

Favorite, i.e., most freqently used: My Yahoo. I look at it at least several times a day. Despite my annoyance with their new navigation, that probably won't change.
... i.e., "coolest IMHO": tossup between del.icio.us and Wikipedia.
... i.e., "where I go to catch up": The news aggregator page on my website.
... i.e., where I can most easily waste the greatest amount of time: Tie, between MeFi and IMDB.com.

I always hate the "what's your favorite" question -- especially if I'm on a date, 'cuz then I have to answer or seem wishy-washy.

I think there may be a little sample bias here, but coincidentally I'd list MetaFilter in all its permutations as number one as well. Followed by Arts and Letters Digest, James Lileks' Bleat, eBay and oh, Instapundit, I guess. No wait, Kevin Drum's blog. No, wait, wait, Daniel Drenzer's. No, I mean....

I like these lists because I always find a new site or ten to check out and enjoy and add to my regular visits.

I prefer the Top 5 sites that are thematicly based instead of the broad brush approach.

And MetaFilter is my favorite website as well. Signed, me too!

Sites I visit daily:

- Meat-eating leftist. Gotta get my fix of straight talk.
- Daypop top 40. "Best of index" that really works.
- Daily Kos. This guy really has a heart. Fires me up.
- al daily. When I want to really read something substantive.
- Slower.net. One of many sites with fantastic pictures.

Five favorite websites (not necessarily in any order):

The public Yahoo group I co-moderate
The nonpublic Yahoo group I co-own
The website where I blog
New York Times
Google (although I’m trying other search engines due to strong recommendations from a friend)

I’m too very new here to list MeFi yet, especially since I don’t have time to keep up regularly.

metafilter...totally addicted. at least it's not crack.
the google family, esp. google.com and groups.google.com
espn, esp. anything by Bill Simmons on Page2
nytimes
gizmodo

cnn was listed earlier in this thread by "..ooOOoo....ooOOoo.." While it is definitely a site that I hit for news after nytimes, mpls star tribune (a total rag, IMO, but it's local for me), and christian science monitor (once you get over the name, it's superb and truly independent reporting; this paper would be much more influential if they had the ability to drop the name), CNN has dropped way down on my list of credible sources after I saw a story a few days ago that said this:

Man killed by exploding lava lamp in store *click here to see video*

I'm not kidding... "click here to see video". Holy sensationalism, Batman!

Speaking of non-news, The Onion also has to get a close 6th on my list...
