You can browse your way through the Reuters 2004 Pictures Of The Year over at Yahoo! News. They also have a Slide Show For Easier Viewing. They range from the Puzzling, to the Amusing, and Sad or kinda Creepy. Some took incredible Timing or Good Luck to capture. I only spotted a couple that looked familiar, including the kite surfing Kerry. My favorites, 2 men on fire, one Literally and one Figuratively.

This is one of the best sports photographs I've ever seen, whether or not synchronized swimming is actually a sport.

Honestly, I can't figure out why most of these photos are considered pictures of the year (disclaimer: part of my job at MSNBC.com is photo editing, including our own Year in Pictures). Since Yahoo doesn't say, I'm curious about what the requirements were or who decided - did Reuters editors pick these? Yahoo's editors? Were these the most emailed photos from Yahoo's site, which might explain the Becks and Posh frame. This feels more like a "personalities of the year", which is certainly fine, there's obviously a place for that kind of work. But to say that these are the best photographs taken in 2004 is a stretch.

I'm a little bothered by the idea of a man on fire being anyone's favorite anything. Maybe that's just me. Not to say that others are much happier. Except The Matrix. (IANAP)

Not that I enjoy watching people burning, it's just an amazing thing to see captured on film, or bits. I wonder how many of these where done with print vs. digital camers?

I love this one of the Ukranian winter sunbathers... I wonder why none of the Abu Graib pictures made the cut. Do these have to be taken by Reuters photogs to be considered? Because that freaky one of the guy in the costume with the fake electrodes is definitely the "image of the year" if not the "photo' of the year.

Whoever selected these pictures of the year had a different concept of Picture of the Year. Some are indeed pretty cool and worthwhile but some (like the Beckham and Posh Spice) are stupid and completely inappropriate.

That picture on "Luck" is just a gorgeous picture, no matter how you look at it. But it may not have taken as much luck as it appears - isn't there another swimmer below the water, holding her in this position?
