oh man, tottally owned...

Hadn't seen it, thanks. Agree with thoughts in earlier thread that its ugly for googles bandwith, and dosn't really help with the google-fu.

Looks like the page title became true (and very good vbfg :-) ).

How come when I typed "google suggest" and "google suggestion" in MeFi search, it found nothing??! I think I know why: the search doesn't look for the words "google" and "suggestion" as seprate words, but the phrase 'google suggestion" together, hence I thought it was not a double post.

How many of those 17,400,000 Google hits for "double post" do you think are from Metafilter? At least half, I'm sure.
posted by painquale at 4:04 AM on December 13, 2004

Entering "double post" (with the quotes) and "site:metafilter.com" (without the quotes) as your search query into standard Google returns 1,040 matches.

I think it lies myself.

SpaceCadet: Search for a distinguishing part of the URL. In this case, searching for "webhp" does it.
posted by mendel at 4:33 AM on December 13, 2004

Or just search mefi for "google" and read beyond the first 4 results.

Dear God.

There has been quite an outbreak recently of double posts seperated by a few days. It's not like it's three people posting at the same time, or someone posting something that was mentioned two years ago. It's not just "$5 Special"s either, it has spread to longtime users faster than a particularly virulent strain of ghonnasyphaherpalaids. I wouldn't mind if AskMe wasn't so overwhelmed with easily googled crap.

What's with all this crap about searching? It was posted 70 posts ago, including deletions!Read the FPPs!, much less the comments. Dont post to the front page if you don't. This isn't your fucking livejournal where you might as well just aggregate boingboing.net into some lame CSS.

A name must be coined for this phenomenon, and fast. Personally, I like Blogger's Ass but I think quonsar and the gang can do much better.
posted by blasdelf at 5:14 AM on December 13, 2004

mendel, thanks for the tip.

blasdelf, as I already said, I searched for "Google suggest" and "Google suggestion". I thought that would cover it since I wanted to post about the Google Suggest tool. The MeFi search even acknowledges there are "currently some issues with the search results" which I kind of took into account, considering the page title.

I want to reach for a cool, refreshing swig of the grey but I'd rather suckle on the Franzia hose suspended above my bed.

Asking someone to read all the FPPs (at least 70 of them as you say) is just stupid when there is a far easier way to identify a possible double post (i.e. a working keyword search).

Anyway, no big deal - this FPP will get deleted, and hopefully the search function will recognise individual words and not just fixed phrases.

blasdelf, Get Your War On syndrome. It's too bad the deleted posts from back then aren't archived, because that whole episode was priceless.

Metafilter: Just type something in to see how it works.
posted by Wolfdog at 5:38 AM on December 13, 2004

It's just that if you'd scrolled a third of the way down the front page you would have seen the other post. You could done find in page on the front page and found it as the first result for "google."

Besides, wouldn't you remember reading the original FPP 2 friggin days ago? You've been able to post here longer than I have, which depresses the crap out of me.

On Preview:
Sorry, but I know I read at least what appears on the front page for every post through RSS. If SpaceCadet had caught up on at least scanning the front page in the last few days, he would have seen the previous post.

On Preview Redux:
Awesome Wolfdog. Now coin it into a meme-ish name that can be applied to this Blue WebTD!

"Hopefully not a double post" says the title. You sorta have to do more than hope.
posted by nthdegx at 5:57 AM on December 13, 2004

blasdelf, the simple problem was I assumed the search facility took into account individual keywords (as I've already said a couple of times). I think you're just being a obtuse here in ignoring my posts. Go find someone else to bark at.

"Hopefully not a double post" says the title. You sorta have to do more than hope.

The "hope" bit was because the search facility said it was having some problems, which I've already said up-thread .

Arrgh! Matt, delete this thread!! Pleeeaase!!

SpaceCadet: I hate to be even more recursive, but try searching MeFi with Google next time, instead of the local search. It'll find those double posts much faster.
posted by mikeh at 6:15 AM on December 13, 2004

SpaceCadet- FWIW, the earlier post didn't draw my attention as much as yours did. What the earlier post failed to mention in the fpp is that this was a new Google function. Indeed, it started out, "A large number of people really don't know the finer points of search." Which sounds kind of like an admonishment- kind of like "If you don't know how to Google, read this." The fact that you clearly indicated it was a new Google function drew me in to actually clicking the link and checking it out.

Kind of ironic, though, that it is a double post about a tool for people who need help with searches, and your search didn't uncover the original. I won't flame you for that since I'm a noob and all, but I do laugh in your general direction. With all do respect to Mick and except for being a double, yours was the better fpp.

Actually I think this might be a triple...who knows we might have the new virating broomstick, here.

Cuz Google N Metafilter go together like sour grapes and hot potato.

Do you have a link to the other two FPPs? I could only find the other FPP mentioned (but don't rely on my searching :-) ).

Here is the other one. It had been deleted.
posted by stopgap at 7:25 AM on December 13, 2004

OMFG! An extra 120 or bytes of data has been displayed on the front page. Call out the constable and hang this SpaceCadet bastard by his balls for this travesty; such a slight to the MeFi community cannot go unanswered!

Seriously, cut the guy some slack. So it's been posted before. Big deal.

Double post or not, I've discovered I am now a part of a second-class MeFi distinction called "$5 Specials". I feel so very special.
posted by effwerd at 7:45 AM on December 13, 2004

So, if I type "T" they think I'm looking for Tara Reid? It's like they're psychic!

And on a somewhat related note, if you type in "sex" or "porn", it doesn't continue auto-completing. I wonder if Google has a list of words that they don't want to suggest... or if the query on those words returns so many results that their servers grind to a halt. (A co-worker discovered this. Honest.)
posted by theFlyingSquirrel at 7:45 AM on December 13, 2004

Funnily enough, theFlyingSquirrel, the very first thing I used this for when I first came across it (snigger) was to look up rude words and phrases. Not unlike yer typical dictionary in my hands as it turns out.

"I take it up the a..." for example was the thing I tried first.

"Frott..." gets you frottaged, etc.

It's important to be creative.

I thought the 17-ers were second-class and that we "$5 Specials" are decidedly third-class.

Since you are the most annoying annoyed, I nominate blasdef as the name for this "phenomenon". As in, "oh man this is a blasdef, this post is so deleted"... or "read the FP you goddamn blasdef!"
posted by sic at 8:34 AM on December 13, 2004

$5 Special"s - ouch, thanks for the ego shot so early in the morning man, heh.

Ok, aside from that, blasdef's actual question I think was: why are there so many double posts even from experienced users?

So yeah what's up with that? Noob issues aside, either the longtimers have become less careful or there's something wrong with the search function?

Few people could ever understand how fitting naming a mistake after blasdelf truly is. What an excellent idea.

As long as all you rabble stay in the back of the bus where you belong, it's all the same to the rest of us.

What would we do without adding our daily snark? :)
