Get a free iPod through referrals?

Free iPod? I wonder if this is legit? Apparently if you signup for a "deal" like a credit card, the BMG cd club, Blockbuster online video rentals, etc, and also get 10 other people to signup as well they will send you a free 40gb photo iPod. Can the $500ish price tag really be offset by these deals? How is this possible?

Well, that's a really fucking lame link.

Very few people actually get 10 people to sign up, most probably stall at 5 or something, so for everyone they have to send an iPod, there are probably scores of people signing up 1-9 people and getting nothing in return.

I don't really think pumpkinhead cares, he obviously just wants his free iPod, which is why he's hawking his referral link on here. If the dude was really smart, he'd buy a text ad.

pumpkinhead, I hope you get your free iPod by spamming Metafilter. And then the iPod gives you cancer.

Yes, it's real.
Yes, people get their iPods/Notebook PCs/TVs/etc.
Yes, it's a pyramid scheme, so the vast majority of people won't get their iPod, not because of any direct scamming, but because they won't be able to get enough people to give them referrals.
Yes, it's become a big enough problem that links to or discussion of "freeX.com" type sites is forbidden in many discussion forums.

Sure it's legit. I recieved my free iPod last week.

This post is another story.

Interesting...

Pumpkinhead has been a member since 2001, and never posted anything until three comments on Dec. 19th, then this link.....

methinks this needs to be deleted!
posted by HuronBob at 5:46 AM on December 19, 2004

Like we wouldn't notice the referral ID in the URL immediately. Fuckwit.

Yes, this post sucked, but perhaps pumpkinhead is simply painfully unaware that Ask Metafilter is lurking behind the scenes? pumpkinhead's profile indicates that he has posted "... no questions and no answers to Ask MetaFilter"

...and yet it isn't deleted. So here I find myself with a quandary. Should I click on his link? I have never, ever, ever heard of such an amazing concept. Why, if it seems to be legit, I might just sign up and get my very own ipod this very day. If only there were some way to compensate this fine fellow for pointing me in the right direction.

Ah, it lets the pile on get bigger. Sleep in, Matt, this ought to be fun.

Pumpkinhead, I truly, truly hope that not a single person signed up for your obvious gaming scam. And I'd expect you'll be needing a new five dollar bill shortly too.
