While Keenspot picks and chooses the webcomics it hosts like a newspaper comics syndicate would, their Keenspace service is the Geocities of the webcomics world, providing hosting for whoever comes along. Or so I thought. You must experience for yourself these samples of webcomics that haven't quite got Keenspace approval yet.

A family inherits and tries to run a flour company after their uncle disappears!

This could be the best syndicated comic strip set in a flour company ever!

So many of these comics involve nerds being sucked into video games, RPGs, or other fantasy worlds.

That's so sad, y'guys.

Wow. That is all I can say about the sample web comics. As has been said, not a looker in the bunch, save this one - it redeems the whole bunch. But a search through the site's forums and elsewhere failed to turn up anything about it. Anyone have any ideas?

Worth keeping tabs on Keenspace for that alone.

This one could actually be funny.

Wow, check out this one. It's about a girl and her cell phone and she discovers the awesomeness of volume control.

C'mon Keenspace, hurry up and approve this comic! I can't wait to see what happens next! Get off yer lazy asses!

Actually, she's a fast food employee, fiddling the volume control on the drive thru headset, hence the title "Drive Thru Blues."

Styx might be so bad that it's good. Or it might just be bad. I can't tell yet. Jitterati may be the best of the bunch, artistically speaking, though the storylines may need a bit of work. Hard to tell from just three panels, though. It'd be nice to see that one given a chance.

I find this bit is even better when read aloud in movie-trailer-guy voice:

In a world where a beings name defines and predestines their very lives there are those that will not stand idle. Believing that life should be left in the hands of those living it they fight for their own freedom, moral and otherwise. As this revolution simmers another one is quickly rising to meet it as the little known Poesjes being to press against the retraints that tie them to their masters....ties that bind in this case will not hold what's coming back for long... And now the citizens of Amarr hold their collective breaths as things play out before them.

KERRRRANG.

(That horrendous sound you hear is the Cliché Train colliding full bore into a pick-up truck full of tired metaphors. My continued interest in this comic was pronounced dead on the scene.)

Actually, now that I've stared at even more of them, it's kind of inspiring.
I want to try to create something and send it in now just to raise the average a little.

Heh, my brother knows the guy who does that. He's been published in our local university or community newspaper for like forever. He's pretty good, but I don't think Jitterati would translate very well - 90% of the humour is very specific to my town, to things that happened that week or to local identities. If you're not from round these parts, it might get confusing...

He already has a strip on Keenspace, though for some reason I can't get any of the actual pics to show up (in either IE or Firefox).

I clicked refresh for maybe ten minutes and saw nothing but pure shit. If I hadn't looked at some of the links in this thread, I'd not have believed anybody pending approval had any talent whatsoever.

Honestly, some of these people can't draw at all. They should maybe try to do something they're capable of. Or learn to draw. Take lessons or something. Most artists spend their whole lives developing their style, and most of these rejects haven't even oh God I'm rambling. I'm such an art snob. Fucking art school.

I think I'm more entertained by these rejected comics than most of the "professional" ones. I may be burned out.

Not to mention, its such a cliche to have westerners doing manga.

Westerners shouldn't draw "manga-style"? I think it's worth pointing out that what we think of as the customary manga art style was pioneered largely by Tezuka Osamu, whose own artistic style was inspired primarily by Walt Disney. If it hadn't been for a Westerner, we wouldn't have manga-style art as we know it.

Whoops.

Screwed that up with the RAND link instead of the direct.

I remember Jitterati. It's almost humour, you can feel the wheels turn as it makes all the required pitstops on the way to the punchline but just before it arrives it runs out of gas. Characters with no real personality and self-conscious attempts at 'wit' mean that it's not funny and it's not clever, like Oscar Wilde on December 1, 1900.

On the other hand, a young man takes care of his twisted little sister and becomes friends with a husky UPS worker. Together they take part in wacky hijinks that are fun for the whole family is a great description for what appears to be a comic about a traffic cone with a balloon on top.

People who are able to do a simple style well, but lack photo-realistic skills, are still good artists in my book. These people, as was pointed out, tend to ignore the idea of finding a style that suits them.
