Grammy Mirk died when I was eight years old. Growing up, I have come to know her through the recollections of older family members. Because she was extremely judgemental, she showed different parts of herself to different people. In turn, they became polarized in how they viewed her. Since a grain of truth exists in everybody's perspective, I have attempted to create a composite sketch of her as seen from many different perspectives. This website is a collection of oral histories of those who have survived her.
It is kind of neat. It made me think of several novels I have read which explore the whole topic of the limits of biography and of trying to know someone from other people's viewpoints - specifically, Carol Shield's The Stone Diaries and Alison Lurie's The Truth About Lorin Jones.
I wonder what the Mirk family thought about this man's airing of family business, though - it wouldn't go over well if I were to do something similar about say, Grandma Swan. posted by orange swan at 10:02 AM on January 19, 2005
