With Venezuela harbouring and aiding Colombian rebels; namely the leftist FARC is the US administration looking to intervene in Latin America? Possibility discussed here

Well, they're just gonna have to take a number and wait to be served.

What's that you say? 3.08 million barrels a day? All right then! Freedom's on the march!

Funny, I'm still waiting for all that Iraqi oil we invaded for.

That's the trouble with crony capitalists that have convinced themselves they are crusaders for freedom: too out of touch with reality to actually get the oil to flow.

And I hate those damn leftists at FARK -- ugh! -- oh, wait...

A quick note that V's leadership is taking a higher percentage of its cut of money from its partnerships with American energy corporations that are drilling and distributing the country's oil. Equitable sharing is not good for American profits, and is hinted as the same motivation for Bush's attempted coup last year.

I like Chavez for standing up to the pirate-capitalists.

I was also amused when Putin confiscated the oil-fields and skyscraper belonging to a russian billionaire capitalist. It's not that I like Putin, but it's good to know a guy can still have his skyscraper confiscated in some parts of the world...

Step out of the car please...

Sir, I am going to have to confiscate that sky scraper...

Is that a skyscraper in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?

Why didn't Rice list Nigeria? They've got lots of oil, too.

Oops, silly me. Strike that. Nigeria's tyrannical regime is cooperating fully with american oil corporations.

Could be just sabre-rattling about oil concerns thus snubbing US corporations.

Those FARCers are not nice people. Really.

It's difficult to see what's going on here. The Chavez regime is courting China like crazy and giving two fingers to Uncle Sam. To expediate oil exports to China the Venezuelans need a pipeline to a Pacific port in either Panama or Colombia (eitherway the pipeline has to pass through Colombia). FARC relishes blowing up pipelines and oil installations. when it is not massacring the inhabitants of peasant villages and kidnapping people.
Is Chavez trying to buy off FARC to protect his interests but still encourage them to destabilise Colombia which is trying hard not to be a narco state.

[...] but still encourage them to destabilise Colombia[...].

Why would Chavez do this?

The only thing I can think of is that it has always been Chavez' dream to bring to fruition the ambitions of his hero Simon Bolivar and form the super state of "Greater Colombia". See this very right wing link.

I don't think Chavez is that irresponsible. Whether you like his politics or not, he is Venezuela's democratically elected leader and, in my humble opinion, expresses genuine concern for his people. Creating instability on Venezuela's western border just seems crazy to me, especially since that's where the oil is...

The Bolívar angle is also in play with Chávez's support of Cuba, which is also getting help from China, which is itself getting a case of Latin fever.

see this documentary if you get a chance. chomsky had a few words to say about the subject, and jeff vail had a few more (sorry for the google cache, his site appears to be down).

327.ca If allowing FARC and sometimes ELN to have base camps in Venezuela isn't destabilising for the border region - what is the reason? On preview - thanks blendor.

Whatever happened to the Iraqi oil revenue?

It's funny that Steve@ thought that HE would be seeing some of the profit. What, just because you voted for Bush?

ps) in the link "squandered" means stolen.

Venezuela's vast oil reserves are not on the western border. Most of the oil is on/around the Orinoco river delta on the eastern part of the country.

Yeah, didn't Bush and his corporatist neocon buddies promise that oil revenues would pay for the illegal invasion of Iraq?

My children and grandchildren (to the seventh generation) want their damn money back and also politely request that we cease loading debt and pollution onto their destiny.

You're right. I was thinking of the Maricaibo region where I've seen a lot of oil exploration. But apparently about 58% of the total reserves are along the Orinoco strip.

Colombia's oil fields are near Arauca on the NW part of her boundary with Venezuela. This region is also where ELN guerillas are to be found.

www.narconews.com is a surprisingly good source of journalism about latin america - they focused on the drug war since it was of interest to one of their major sponsors but cover a lot of ground.

Their editor, who speaks quite passionately about 'authentic journalism', has won several legal challenges up to and including the US Supreme Court, including one Banamex lawsuit after corruption charges were laid and another against the NYTM regarding one of their correspondent's provably biased and terrible coverage in Mexico.

I think they'll probably continue to focus on spreading the invasion of the middle east around.
