Ann Coulter and the facts on Vietnam
Its nice seeing Ann Coulter squirm. While being interviewed by the CBC's Bob McKeown, Coulter displayed her lack of historical knowledge on Canada's involvement (or lack of) in Vietnam. What's even more telling is her inability or refusal to back down even when she is dead wrong. Here is the video.

Y'know, this just didn't seem so bad to me. I really, truly loathe Ann Coulter, but honestly, if I were in her position and I had a fact wrong, I would probably say about the same thing and act the same way -- I wouldn't just believe this other person, who might well be wrong himself.

Having one fact wrong is a far, far lesser sin to me than her style of hate-laced liberal bashing, which does involve messing with the facts. Yeah, I'm glad she got a fact wrong and I'm glad McKeown pointed it out immediately, but I don't think she handled it badly (except for "not getting back" to him, which of course McKeown could spin however he wanted, even if Coulter meant it as a joking retreat).

I've noticed that one of Coulter's main strategies is to start reeling off bullshit as if it's fact...

You can see in her appearances and her writing that she actually thinks things can become true by saying them over and over.

I don't believe that analysis is specific to Ann - that seems to be the M.O. of the Bush administration.

Is there anything particularly unchristian about smoking and drinking? When I was a kid out parish priests used to smoke and drink regularly, there was a catholic men's club 30 yards from the presbytery which served subsidised booze as well as cigs.

Ann Coulter was in my sister's graduating class at New Canaan (CT) High School. Neither she nor any of the old friends she's re-connected with through classmates.com have any recollection of her, but we looked in her old yearbook, and lo, there she is. Very odd. We often joke that it would be great if we could go back in time and run her off the road or something. On second thought, maybe somethign like that is why she turned out to be miserable shrew in the first place. /OT

Here's a good overview of Canada's position on Vietnam.

I like this part:
Canada tried to play a mediator role to help reach a conclusion that could allow the U.S. to honorably leave the conflict that prime minister of Canada Lester Bowles Pearson thought was a horrible mistake.

As the war escalated, relations between the two nations deteriorated. The lowest point was in April 2, 1965 when Pearson gave a speech at Temple University in the United States which called for a reduction in the bombing of North Vietnam. A furious Lyndon B. Johnson met with Pearson and apparently grabbed the much smaller Canadian by the collar and held him against the wall, and yelled, "you don't come here and piss on my rug."

I'm afraid that your comment bears very little relevance to my question, which asked about nofundy's implied link between drinking, smoking and being unchristian. I made no reference to Ann Coulter's moral positions.
To clarify things further I would point out that Christian churches tend to be generally against the behaviour described in your Coulter quote whilst churches representing a highly significant number of Christians have no such position on smoking and drinking, and tacitly approve of same. Thus your attempt to draw a parallel between the issues is worthless.

CHOMSKY:
".... Canada doesn't care at all about the latter; Canada has a horrible record in that respect. For example, take Suharto's Indonesia, which is a brutal, murderous state. I think Canada was supporting it all the way through because it was making money out of the situation. And we can go around the world. Canada strongly supported the US invasion of South Vietnam, of the whole of Indochina. In fact Canada became the per capita largest war exporter, trying to make as much money as it could from the murder of people in Indochina. In fact, I'd suggest that you look back at the comment by a well known and respected Canadian diplomat, I think his name was John Hughes, some years ago, who defined what he called the Canadian idea, namely "we uphold our principles but we find a way around them". Well, that's pretty accurate. And Canada is not unique in this respect, maybe a little more hypocritical."

They already bought it. People point to Fox News as some propaganda machine, but it isn't one in the traditional sense. It doesn't change opinions-- it merely reinforces opinions. There's a large subsection of Americans who love war and military action because they're impressed by muscle-flexing and hate liberalism because they see it as effeminate and/or threatening. Fox News just massages them. If Fox News changed their agenda to a more centrist stance tomorrow, the people that watch it wouldn't change their views. They'd just complain about how the "liberal media" had taken over "their" channel.

I find that the popularity of Coulter, O'Reilly, et al really speaks most about the horrid state of education in this country. (the USA, that is)

*Kids do not learn how to think.*

They just learn how to memorize useless facts and regurgitate them on command, with virtually no time spent on actual cognative skills or analysis. They don't learn how to think logically, and that's how the flaming pundits (on both sides, but the right is far more blatant about it) get away with things.

Coulter's rhetoric SOUNDS good, but has virtually no logical grounding. She's great at making sweeping statements, and of building unfalsifiable arguments. And people who don't understand logic seem to believe that unfalsifiable == correct. Your debator cannot strike down what you said, therefore you win, and thus your argument must be correct.

It's a depressingly effective strategy. I hold special emnity for Coulter, however, because of her absolutely shameless, deceptive tendency to take quotes \ facts out of context. I once perused the first chapter of one of her books, and just off the top of my head, I spotted three or four quotes which she had taken wildly out of context. (for example, she blasts a democratic senator for "praising" Bin Laden by talking about how much money he gives to Islamic charities. Problem being it was a senate discussion of "why do they hate us?" and the senator in question was attempting an answer to "Why do the Muslims support Bin Laden?")

But, of course, only a tiny percentage of people would either remember the event offhand or bother to look up the senate record for themselves. Thus, if they're overly credulous, they believe a little more that the liberals really DO hate America and are, of course, then more likely to take anything else she says at face value.

It's a vicious, manipulative circle. It disturbs me greatly. And if we could just get some actual LEARNING going on in schools - as opposed to memorizing - we could get rid of it.

The importance of Fox News is vasty overstated. Fox News is a niche market that's not very popular.

From casual googling:

On a normal, boring day, Fox News might get 3 million viewers for the whole day.

The evening national news on NBC + ABC + CBS, the liberal media as Fox might call it, gets around 30 million.

I can't quickly find daily numbers, but NPR's Morning Edition and All Things Considered, which Fox might call flaming commies, get around 20 million listeners weekly, and are the second and third most popular radio shows in the US.

Pointing out the television foibles of someone who belongs to the opposite political persuasion as you is really pretty dumb. "Ha, ha. Look at them." Grow up.

Well, captaintripps, I don't know that it's all just the politics. Many of us here will gladly sit through intelligent conservative commentary, even if we don't agree with it.

But Anne Coulter is a different beast. Quite frankly, I think she's political in the same way that Pat Robertson is religious which is to say not at all.

I see her as an ever-so-slightly more sophisticated version of the Morning Show Mooks who did the "Tsunami Song." Instead of getting her shock jollies from random spewing of racial epithets and dirty words, she uses hot button issues and invective.

Pissing in the punchbowl is fun when your a teenager, and even occasionaly as a grownup, but she's made a career of it, and it's boring at this point. I'd say let her dissipate like the fart in the wind she is, and in a year or so she'll join the likes of Sister Aimee Semple and Madelyn Murray O'Hare in the Whatever Became of That Old Cranks Dustbin?

But, I'll grant you, that we kick her around so much here, that I'm almost starting to feel a little sorry for the little dingbat. For that reason alone we must desist!!

A furious Lyndon B. Johnson met with Pearson and apparently grabbed the much smaller Canadian by the collar and held him against the wall, and yelled, "you don't come here and piss on my rug."

For the record: According to eyewitnesses quoted in Lawrence Martin's The Presidents and The Prime Ministers, LBJ actually physically lifted Pearson - a mild-mannered, bowtied, Nobel Peace Prize-winner - off the ground by his lapels. The dressing down occurred privately on a patio at Camp David, but Johnson was shouting so loudly that officials from both countries inside the house could hear every word of it.

With all due respect to Noam Chomsky, this is a pretty stark illustration of how difficult it is for Canada to exercise a wholly independent foreign policy. Chomsky's correct, though, that Canada's captains of industry are no less rapacious and amoral than their American counterparts. (A more recent example: Calgary's Talisman Energy, which pulled out of Sudan - where its petrodollars were more or less directly funding the Sudanese government's civil-war effort - only when faced with the beginnings of a public-relations disaster.)

Ah, my. I don't know how that story reads for you US Americans, but for this Canadian it looks like a taunt. The juxtaposition of paragraphs shows a subtle Canadian sense of humour, mocking Fox by reporting what they've said, following it by a wry comment that is innocuous on its surface, but is actually a fairly cutting put-down.

Like British humour, I suspect the actual gist of it is pretty much inaccessible to most US Americans.

jonmc: That's fine, but the long point of it is that knocking around an atrocious talking head about being an atrocious talking head is pretty much on the level with what that atrocious talking head wants. We all know what she is. We're all also human, so I know why it is felt that there's a need to point it out when she's a dingbat (or worse) on television. That doesn't keep me from thinking it's self-defeating and self-aggrandizing to point it out.

I'm sure it makes people feel better about themselves or their beliefs, but unless I'm totally misunderstanding my history the only gadfly to really be remembered was Socrates (and he was good at it).

Clearly I do not feel sorry for her, but I also fail to see the point when people point out the purposeful monstrosities of a different political (or punch bowl pissical) persuasion. It's quite obvious that the only reason Coulter has ever used was as the last six letters of her second-to-last book. Yet people respond to her each and every time.

On another note, my room mate and I have fathers on opposite sides of the political spectrum. His father sent us Coulter's "Treason" and my father sent us "What We've Lost" by Graydon Carter. Both sit next to each other on the bookshelf, unread, because reading that stuff is a waste of time.

Both books share some things in common. They are the same size. They have poor binding. They are not printed on acid-free paper. They will not last more than 30 years before deteriorating.

never were we even close to supporting the US militarily

Well, now, that may be going a little far (if I can distract anyone from the Coulter-bashing for a moment). Victor Levant, in Quiet Complicity: Canadian Involvement in the Vietnam War (1986: Between the Lines, Toronto), says:
Canadian delegates engaged in espionage for the US Central Intelligence Agency and aided the covert introduction of American arms and personnel into South Vietnam while they spotted for US bombers over North Vietnam. Canadian commissioners shielded the US chemical defoliant program from public inquiry, parlayed American threats of expanded war to Hanoi, and penned the reports legitimating both the rupture of the Geneva Agreements and the US air war over North Vietnam. Ottawa would later assert that these actions were necessary to counter-balance the activities of the Eastern bloc countries with whom they shared membership on the truce commissions.

Canadian aid during the war went only to S Vietnam, $29 million 1950-75, routed through the Colombo Plan and the Canadian Red Cross. Although humanitarian in appearance, Canadian assistance was an integral part of the Free World Assistance Program, co-ordinated by the US Department of State with the International Security Office of the Pentagon as the point of contact. In the field, Canadian capital assistance was regulated by the US-RVN Health Defense Agreement and administered by the International Military Assistance Force Office in Saigon. On a number of occasions, Ottawa stopped the shipment of ecumenical medical relief to civilian victims of the war in North Vietnam.

At home. 500 firms sold $2.5 billion of war materiel (ammunition, napalm, aircraft engines and explosives) to the Pentagon. Another $10 billion in food, beverages, berets and boots for the troops was exported to the US, as well as nickel, copper, lead, brass and oil for shell casings, wiring, plate armor and military transport. In Canada unemployment fell to record low levels of 3.9%, the gross domestic product rose by 6% yearly, and capital expenditure expanded exponentially in manufacturing and mining as US firms invested more than $3 billion in Canada to offset shrinking domestic capacity as a result of the war. The herbicide "Agent Orange" was tested for use in Vietnam at CFB Gagetown, NB. US bomber pilots practiced carpet-bombing runs over Suffield, Alberta and North Battleford, Sask, before their tours of duty in SE Asia. And the results of the only successful peace initiative to Hanoi—that of Canadian diplomat Chester Ronning—would be kept from public knowledge in order not to harm official US-Canadian relations. Ten thousand young Canadian men fought in the US armed forces in the war. At the same time 20,000 American draft-dodgers and 12,000 army deserters found refuge in Canada.
(Quoted here.) So while no troops were sent, your implication that Canada was horrified by the whole thing and avoided getting its hands dirty is incorrect.

What's even more telling is her inability or refusal to back down even when she is dead wrong.

Before the election I happened upon CSPAN coverage of Ann Coulter speaking at Stanford(?). A U.S. flag was pinned to the wall behind her and she was lecturing a classroom full of twenty somethings. I can't remember a word she said, but the sound of people yelling outside the lecture hall managed to filter into the audio. I assumed it was some form of protest. I watched a little longer to see if I could pick up a reaction to the intruding noise in her face. Nothing. Then, the flag starts coming off the wall. It slumps, wounded and unrecognizable behind her. Some of the students start murmuring and Ann looks confused. She glances over at the flag, still desperately clinging to the wall. Then for just one moment, right before she resumed speaking I swear she squirmed. Did anyone else see this?

Taken in the context of history, she is dead wrong. No clip is an island. 'Real life' provides the evidence.

Taken in the context of the interview, her 'I think you are wrong' statements constitute not backing down.

However, yes, a distinct lack of squirmage. She doesn't strike me as the squirming type - too brittle. She's more the 'deny everything no matter how many ridiculous facts you have to invent to save face' model.

The entertainment value I derive from the three has to do with imagining the reaction they produce from far left viewers. Maybe I give them to much credit but I figure they couldn't possibly believe that what they are saying is the absolute truth (same goes for a lot of what I see on the network news and CNN). I figure it is all scripted with the goal of getting an emotional reaction from the viewer.

Rather then concentrating on how ignorant she may be or not be, one should rather expose how much hatred for dissenting american she has got and how much does the "culture" of hate damage nations.
