The high bidder on the $15K Playstation auction indeed did not pay up. However, bearing in mind how eBay's bidding works, the final bid may mean that someone else was willing to pay almost that much.

As for why they smashed it... probably specifically to piss off people who would have paid $600 for it. It sounds as if they got $600 worth of fun out of it and the promotional value for their site was probably worth much more than that.
