Wow, it's so nice to know that a group of people (and I mostly mean the people in her address book) who have only the faintest hint of privacy to begin with have had it further torn away.

See, what this really means is that MeFi needs a third page.

I saw those earlier today and considered posting them along with the address book here, but then I realized that I really dislike this cult of celebrity, especially when folks like Paris Hilton don't actually do anything creative. At least Britney Spears can sing.

That said, there's something odd about the photos leaked and I wonder if this is another fake publicity stunt. The topless photos are way too fake looking for a cheap tiny phonecam. They look like pictures of a magazine page or something, or real images compressed to look like phonecam images. Whatever it is, I'm not buying half of the photos on that page.

I think you've gotta be a bit of a conspiracy theorist to think this is a marketing campaign --- who the hell would want to subscribe to something where their privacy is so poorly protected?

A marketing campaign from a competitor? Seems too liable to get crushed for slander/libel/whatever this would be if it were fabricated.

Can anyone confirm that these stars phone numbers are real? I think it would be cool, I just don't want to be one of *those people* that actually does the calling. Related Question... Why do stars know all of the other stars in Hollywood and have each other's contact information. It seems like a very creepy club where they are all in on it with each other and pulling weird / crazy stunts like this, competing with each other to get more and more famous / more and more attention. Or am I nuts?

I think you've gotta be a bit of a conspiracy theorist to think this is a marketing campaign ---

I don't think so. Remember people are paid to post stuff to forums like this and to go to bars and play with (e.g.) their Sidekick until they catch someone's attention. Then they start extolling the virtues of the product. Actually, I think it's a necessary part of being an informed consumer in the 21st century to suspect everything as being viral marketing.

And the naked photos look fake. Also, why aren't there any photos where she's not perfectly groomed?

Wow.

Here's a curious number:

Egplant dike ass: 1-310-279-****

...found near:

Feed the children: 235-933-98001

and

Fergie: +1-323-855-****

And I used to read this guy's books when I was a kid:

Rich, Richie: 1-469-878-****

I think this is real. Partly because there's a couple of people I know (not well) mentioned in her notes and phone numbers, and they're not necessarily people that someone would know to include. It's hard to believe that it's real, but I think it is.

Weird glimpse into the life of someone like her, but about what I would have expected.

Jim Jones' reference to T-Mobile security issues was posted on slashdot about a month ago. The article's good for a read because of implications of bigger security problems involving the US government.

But yes, the article also implies that the pictures are real:

The swiped images [of various celebs, including Hilton] are not mentioned in court records, but a source close to the defense...says Jacobsen amused himself and others by obtaining the passwords of Sidekick-toting celebrities from the hacked database, then entering their T-Mobile accounts and downloading photos they'd taken with the wireless communicator's built-in camera.

I'll vote for this hurting T-Mobile, big time. We're so paranoid in general about people having access to our infomration -- who in the hell will feel comfortable putitng thier personal information on a Sidekick after seeing how simply a celebrity's was obtained online and posted?

Would I trust a remote server with my pictures as I took them? With private numbers and notes? Heck no, now. (And no, this isn't the equivalent of e-mail getting hacked -- it's more like your PDA, camera, and personal notebook getting hacked, all on one swoop.)

Convergence burns.

This is shameful.

We have about two hundred comments here on Mefi and hardly anyone has spared a thought for the poor ordinary people who are neither public figures nor have done anything wrong, but now have their private contacts open to everyone to take advantage of.

Even if Paris Hilton deserved this, certainly none of the people who have been exposed in her addressbook have.

I hope that whoever posted the diary has the same thing happen to him! Burn in hell, you mother!

Perhaps we've spared a thought, but not a word? People aren't going to be pranking the joe shmoes in Paris's phonebook nearly as much as the celebrities, but, yeah, I feel a bit sorry for them. I'm not sure what "taking advantage of a private contact" means, though.

These have been all over the web for two days now. Any of the numbers would have been changed and reassigned by now.

The hacker in question has been caught.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/02/16/t_mobile_hacker_guilty/

It should also be noted that among the people from SA and Genmay who made prank calls, many recieved callbacks from the FBI. This is a little more important than the contact list of a vapid slut, as it was not just her compromised (again) but also the accounts of many others.

Before his arrest last October, Jacobsen used his access to a T-Mobile database to obtain customer passwords and Social Security numbers, and to monitor a US Secret Service cyber crime agent's email, according to government court filings in the case. Sources say the hacker was also able to download candid photos taken by Sidekick users, including Hollywood celebrities, which were shared within the hacking community.

Furthermore, Genmay was blamed by the hacker's group for leaking the information and suffered a convienient DDOS last night.

I apologize for any repeat information, I've been up too long.

Then called paris and been like hey paris its me james we met last saturday at the bar (insert trendy night club) you said you were interested in hanging out. I had a great time talking about (insert banal subject) we should meet. Treat her like a human being instead of some pampered media whore, and then fuck her and sell the tape to further my rise to stardom and eventual anger at having my number revealed because of shoddy tmobile security.....

thats how it worked out in my head anyway.

Bugbread, maybe I didn't phrase it right, but my point is that no one deserves this kind of exposure and invasion of privacy for the pleasure of others. Not even celebrities. It's just wrong to derive pleasure from the misery of others. And I'm sure people have become rather angry and miserable to find out their private phone numbers and email addresses are privy to all.

You can argue that celebrities court exposure of any kind. But I'd like to ask everyone to put yourself in their shoes for a moment -- how would you like it if someone you knew had their addressbook put on the internet with your contact and possibly other intimate details made fun of (and pranked) by millions of people around the world.

And even if you're one of the ordinary joe shmoes in the addressbook, it certainly cannot be pleasant to think that your details are equally as exposed irregardless of whether you draw as much attention as the celebs.

"... certainly none of the people who have been exposed in her addressbook have."

Well, the Joe Schmoes aren't going to get phone calls, I bet. The person I (sort of) know is a high-profile wealthy person, but I bet he doesn't get any phone calls. If I ever find out if he did, I'll report back here. But I bet he won't.

So it's the other celebrities that are vulnerable. But, being celebrities, it's hard to believe that they won't have very little trouble getting their phone numbers changed. This will cause some trouble for them in terms of people they want to be able to reach them...but we all change our phone numbers from time to time, for whatever reasons.

In my opinion, the most sensitive information would have been the private emails, almost none of which were released.

On Preview: gluechunk, I bet that this hacker got the login and password info by way of timyang's hacker. But the dates on this make it clear that it wasn't the latter guy. Or, if it was (because he's not currently in jail, according to the article), he's really in deep shit.

Well, technically, I disagree, but that's just because I'm anal. For example, Pol Pot, Hitler, Stalin, and the like deserve this kind of invasion of privacy. And I don't think it would be wrong to derive pleasure from their misery. But I agree that merely obnoxious people (Hilton, etc.), don't deserve it. I think we agree at heart.

However, unfortunately, the reality is that I'm just not bothered. My outrage seems to be broken. I know it's bad (if not so much the spilling of Paris's secrets, then the telephone numbers et al of normal folks, like her dentist or what-have-you), but I don't feel that it's bad. I guess I'm just not that good a person.

Actually, I bet he will. The reason is that someone is going to take the time to call all the "Lauren"s and "Michael"s on the list. They are going to be just that bored, and presumably they will take precautions like using a phone that's not theirs or a prepaid phone to make these calls. While Christina Aguilera is getting hundreds of calls, "Paige" or "Rachel" is getting tens, which is still probably more calls than they get in a normal day anyway, in which case it will get pretty annoying.

Celebrities trust people with phone numbers like normal people do. Ask the manager at the Apple Store at the Grove in Los Angeles. They don't say it out loud to the general public like most other people do when they purchase their computer (the phone number is needed for the service contract), but they give their real phone numbers (on little strips of paper which are promptly torn up) and pick up personally when called (most don't have secretaries or receptionists). Especially for the B list people (not Stephen King or Christina Aguilera) or normal people, this can get pretty annoying.

"This went on all night," said the peeved reality TV star and writer. "Finally, at 5:30 a.m., I took them off the hook. This morning, I put them back on and they started ringing immediately. It's driving me insane."

Gluechunk:
"Nick Jacobsen was arrested last year. Are you saying he's the one responsible for this current hack?

Some of the paris emails put up have a timestamp of late Saturday evening. How could they have been "all over the web for two days now"?"

-

"Now free on bail and living in Oregon, Jacobsen faces a maximum possible sentence of five years imprisonment. Sentencing is set for 16 May."

By two days I mean late saturday evening, when most of the actual calls occured, and sunday. He was in cahoots with a group of hackers, free on bail, and no doubt quite capable of acquiring Ms. Hilton's address book. It's possible she hadn't even changed the password. I bet it was Tinkerbell, or whatever her dog is named.

If you're going to go, go out with a bang.

EB -I have no idea, but it seems, probably, not totally random that the number of a phreaker is in her notes. Perhaps it was placed there (rival phreakers?) or perhaps she actually did meet this particular guy — but that seems unlikely somehow. Just strange, anyway.

Somebody may have noticed the following

Phase 1: she gets the fuck videos online (outrage, sex, internet)
Phase 2: she gets caught (video of) stealing her own video at
some newsagent (outrage,theft,sex)
Phase 3: her mobile gets hacked and it reeks of sex, morbid idiocy, birth control pills etc (outrage, theft, hacking, sex)

Sooner or later the next best way to publicize will be phaking an attempted suicided and end on Oprah.

Let's fuel some well deserved envy by pointing out she'll earn in a year more then 100 of you'll ever earn in your all life...and by doing ? Nothing. Something is wrong.

Following a link from bobo123's link:

When I woke up on Sunday morning, I immediately checked my e-mail. There were a few additional, positive replies from "Notification List" readers, and then there was this other one, from a guy who referenced that he had seen the story on MetaFilter.

I hadn't heard of "MetaFilter," so as a first guess I typed the obvious "metafilter.com" into my browser. Up popped their homepage (they're a blog/discussion forum website). To my surprise, at the top of the page I read, "Chris-calls! What if you received Chris Rock's old cell phone number and his celebrity friends kept on calling you?"

Ladies and gentlemen, the fundamental interconnectedness of things.

Just to come in as a T-Mobile Sidekick 2 customer, most anyone who's actually used the service does discover that there's this nice web portal that Danger provides you where you can access all your data over the web.

Just saying, it's shouldn't be some great shock to know that there's a central server where all your data is stored.

And the address book/notes pages, for what it's worth, exactly match the web interface UI.

My wife called one of the numbers last night, and got a voicemail greeting that explained that the actor's number had been leaked on the internet, and HERE'S THE NEW NUMBER. Good to know Paris keeps good mental company.

actually, a friend of mine (a hairdresser) was on that sidekick...
from his email...
hello everyone, a very famous client of mine lost her
cell phone. The person who found it has downloaded to
the web. i have had 150 calls in 12 hours from freaks.
so here is my new number........

sooo...everyone on her phone had to get a new one...hmmm...
assuming 1/3 of them are t-mobile users and getting a new phone and service is what, like 200 bucks....how much did t-mobile just make off this?

I just thought of something.

Paris Hilton is the most free person in the world.

Think about it. She has no responsibilities *whatsoever*. She can say or do anything (or anyone) she wants and there will be no reprocussions whatsoever. Even normal rich celebrities have some governors on their behavior based on societal expections, but Paris has no such barrier holding her back.

Which leads me to wonder... is she actually the idiot she appears to be? Or could this all be a carefully-constructed ruse to get herself into this position? It seems staggering to believe a total moron could stumble into a state of being that most people long for with all their hearts.

Just pondering...

The number returned registered to a Dr. Stephen Patt, who I then googled.

According to this site, “Suboxone and Subutex approved doctor in Santa Monica, CA. Dr. Stephen Patt may be able to help patients struggling with drug addiction, specifically those withdrawing from herion or other opiates by prescribing suboxone or subutex.”

Now, why someone would need Dr. Patt’s assistance and his phone number at their reach is up for speculation. You do the math.
On preview:

I watched "No Maps For These Territories" last night. It's a documantary about William Gibson. He talks about the mediaspace that's a kind of prosthetic nervous system. I like the idea of "Paris" as the incarnation of some weird dream that's bubbled up out of the collective media-consciousness.

I'd never made the connection between Paris and Gibson, but geez.. it's so true. Paris Hilton really is like something ripped out of a (SF-series) Gibson novel, I mean complete with wireless hacking!

I once knew an heiress much wealthier than Paris Hilton. She was about 20 and in college. She was very nice even though she was both absurdly rich and beautiful. In fact, lots of us that knew her would comment on how nice of a person she was—in the sense that it offended our view of the natural order of things that someone wealthy and beautiful would also be a nice person.

However, now she's in her thirties. I can find out various gossip about her from the gossip and society pages. Somehow, between then and now, she's become the shallow bitch that everyone always assumed she must have been. I think the difference was between being around mostly normal people and being mostly around the rich and beautiful Manhattan and LA creme de le creme and that bizarre, incestuous little universe.

This is only to offer up a sort of ambivalent defense of Paris Hilton. Being fabulously wealthy and beautiful doesn't mean that you're born any different than anyone else and so there are good people and bad people. On the other hand, this is a really weird fucking world these people live in and it's a wonder that any of them manage to stay relatively normal and decent. Of course Paris Hilton admires her breasts at every opportunity. Fifty million other people do.

On the other hand, this is a really weird fucking world these people live in and it's a wonder that any of them manage to stay relatively normal

There was a cool little doc on HBO a while back called "Born Rich" I think (some totally mundane/descriptive title like that, anyway), about rich kids & the world they inhabit. It really is sort of bizarre. I remember the heir to the Whitney fortune talking about when he realized that not everyone had a family museum...

I was sent to prep school (my dad's an academic and thought it would benefit me; as a scholarship kid I felt socially ostracized and hated it, but that's another story) and got a peek into richkidland, but that was nothing compared with those born into billion dollar estates, where they literally never have to think about working or about money at all. Spending a few thousand dollars on an evening out is completely normal to them, and doesn't even really register as a concern. All that they're stuck having to worry about is how they'll amuse themselves while alive, and since people from 'normal' families will Not Understand at all, they mostly hang out with one another, or try to get on TV.

In the mid-90's I was living with a woman who had just been hired as the reservations manager for a restaurant that was about to open in Manhattan. The proprietor gave her a list of the personal numbers of around 200 celebrities and media bigwigs who were to be given a secret reservation number that was pretty much the only way to get a table in the first six months at least. The list was put on my laptop. I managed to resist any drunken urges to prank call Jack Nicholson and David Bowie and eventually forgot about it. A year later I bought a new computer and gave the old laptop to a young actress of my acquaintance, the list still on it. When she came across it, she was somewhat surprised by my glittery social circle. At my prompting she did delete it and, karmically perhaps, has become very successful in her own right.

dabitch, the SS is responsible for computer crime. Also counterfeiting. Not sure how this came to be. These days the FBI has taken over much of that role, but the SS still has jurisdiction if it wants it.

Born rich... doesn't mean that you're born any different than anyone else and so there are good people and bad people
I had a buddy who was born dirt poor. I mean dirt, dirt poor. One of the most talented, creative, smartest humans I've ever met. Absolutely no support system around him. Yet through a lot of hard work and struggle and going through the military to afford a college degree (despite having a genius level IQ - albeit unnurtured since his school was too poor to have any kind of real gifted program) he now is: middle class. Perhaps upper middle class with his wife's income. I'm sure eventually he'll be wealthy, but think of all the effort he had to go through just to survive when he could be working on a myriad of other things worthy of his talent.
I can't help but think how many people like him are dying of starvation somewhere while self-serving idiots gobble up as much of the resources as they can.
Paris is in no way free. Anyone who is a slave to their Id as much as she is can't be called free no matter how much license she is given.
In as much as she is a prodigal idiot, I do blame the machine which allows this to go on.
(Illinois for example just eased off increases for education)
Ironic. She's famous for lowering herself to menial tasks, yet she's really only suited for menial tasks.
...perhaps a whorehouse. Nothing wrong with an honest hooker.

I've met a (very) few celebs.
...I find I have nothing to say.
"Enjoy your work..." s'about it. I mean, they're strangers.
I suppose I could gush...but I'm stuck again - what to say?
(Although I'm uncomfortable in those situations anyway)
Unless we have a common interest. I'm disappointed I won't ever get to talk to Jerry Seinfeld for example, not for his work, but we're both Superman fans.
I'd love to talk to Kevin Smith about comics too.
Steve Martin is a Douglas Hofstaeder fan, I'd love to chat with him about Godel, Escher, Bach.
