Apologies - I'm sorry that the joke isn't transparent. Its seemed a rather bizarre bit of self-promotion.

Apple, beleaguered as usual, is forever destined to irrelevancy and niche markets. They should just shut down and return what cash is left over to the stockholders. Wintel won, and that's that. End of story. They are obviously in the final throes of their ultimate death knell, or they wouldn't be so desperately grasping at any straw to make their shrinking, closed, incompatible platform seem viable. Just more Reality Distortion Field, nothing to see here, move along. Enjoy the Kool-aid.

I don't mind their niche status, and they are still out there and still selling computers, software and noisemaking gizmos, and people keep buying them. Seems like good business to me. Obviously people are waiting upon results from the 'ipod halo effect' and seeing if they can get a larger market share, or if there is any truth to that meme at all. But given that apple are doing pretty good at the moment, this does seem an odd thing to flag up.

Hey, I think this is very relevant. My brother gets his hair done at this place, and he's sent me the link twice in the last few days. Now he wants an iMac and a haircut.

ok, sorry Devils Rancher, I just looked into your profile... I should check my horoscope today, if it doesn't say "you'll have problems with communication today," then I'll write it in there.

Yeah, people who know little but say much have been saying that they've been "on the brink of bankruptcy" for over 10 years now...

I'm giving up trying to figure out humour today. Its not my day. So, please, alms: you are joking, right?

"Mac OS X is by far the most stable, modern platform available in the salon industry right now."

Was it not available in the salon industry before?
posted by clevershark at 10:35 AM on March 15, 2005

Thanks for the vote of confidence, spock, but is there anybody in the salon industry reading who could vouch for it...?
posted by blindsam at 10:37 AM on March 15, 2005

The salon industry is like Iran, they weren't allowed to sell os x out there until condi rice got a whole new look.
posted by blindsam at 10:39 AM on March 15, 2005

So the salon I go to also uses Macs. What exactly is the point of this FPP?
posted by gyc at 10:43 AM on March 15, 2005

1. Buy a Salon
2. Buy a Mac
3. Profit!

My dentist's office is Mac only. Apparently, there's some really fantastic dental software that's only on the Mac. Last time I was there, I noted his receptionist's cool iMac. He takes me into his office and he's got this bad-ass set up, G5, iSight, cinema display, Mac mug, Mac stickers on the windows. He's got everything but an iPod. So I show him mine. Give him a quick demo.

He ordered his iPod before I left the office.

Drink the Kool-Aid, rinse and spit.

I just couldn't decide if it was supposed to be "Hooray, Apple is taking over!" or "lame old Apple is doing stupid self-promotion." Which, to me, indicates that it's pretty middle-of-the-road fare.

It's probably not Apple's best work, but it's not bad enough to be funny.
posted by dougunderscorenelso at 10:52 AM on March 15, 2005

Gwint has the idea.

Yeah, people who know little but say much have been saying that they've been "on the brink of bankruptcy" for over 10 years now... I'd like to be just 6.9 billion away form the verge of bankruptcy myself.

Being a male Texan, I'm constitutionally prohibited from referring to the place where us guys get our hair cut as a "salon," and I don't recall seeing any computers there either way, but my kid's Orthodontist has an office full of Macs, too.
posted by Devils Rancher at 10:52 AM on March 15, 2005

I realize that people who comment never actually read the links before posting, but you would think the author of the FPP would.

The salon software being spoken of is not an Apple product. However Apple is promoting it, for obvious reasons. It was written for the OS X platform and won Apple Design awards. Testimonials here.

Regarding the platform the linked article says: "We never worry about viruses or system crashes. We train our employees relatively quickly and easily. Our IT consulting costs are minimal compared to salons that use PCs."

Viruses, spyware/adware are all but non-existent on OS X. The people drinking the kool-aid are the ones who think you have to put up with that crap to have a computer.

I get my hairdid up at Supercuts. They're still on Tandy, and they pass the savings along to me and mine. Y'all suckers.

I didn't read the article, because I didn't want to have to get a Salon day pass or subscription.

Am I the only one who noticed that they have a Dell running "QuickBooks for Windows (accounting)"? All that eye candy and the real business is done on a PC?
posted by jdfan at 12:11 PM on March 15, 2005

I've never been to a place where hair is cut that any computer systems were used, so I'm not surprised Apple would rock this market.
posted by Ynoxas at 12:14 PM on March 15, 2005

So, that salon is the Best in Seattle?

I'd much prefer the Cheapest in Seattle, where their 'client tracking software' is a coffee stained notebook, and their 'elegant design (in) technology' is the receptionist's newest tattoo.

These are starting to remind me of those "Dewar's Profile," scotch ads from back in the 80's. Which makes sense since a certain amount of Apple's success is due to flattery-based lifestyle marketing a la "the kind of man who reads Playboy." A lot of consumers want to see themselves as the people in the Mac ads or already do. It's brilliant marketing, especially since it likes to pretend it isn't marketing.

When I lived in Tokyo, I wanted to develop software for the salon industry. In Aoyama (an area the size of Central Park) there are over 1600 salons, and many of the owners (and some of the stylists) tool around in Ferraris. That's the kind of niche market I want to be in.
posted by bashos_frog at 5:44 AM on March 16, 2005

sarcasm sarcasm and more sarcasm... most stylists I know in Austin would ahem.... well; scissors, product, and colour ain't too very technical. And most don't file on 4/5 of their income for a reason.

Adding a computer to most salons would be like adding a $30,000 a year electronic mouth to feed... updates, debugs (idiots + computer = expensive mess), pt network guy, ....

I like the $11 hair cuts my barber gives me, and he likes the $4 tip I give him. Besides; I am fully capable of washing my own hair, thank you; and keep that product goo c**p out of my hair!
