The greatest cover ever. 10 years ago, a Norwegian band called Hurra Torpedo performed a cover of the 80s classic "Total Eclipse of the Heart". Thankfully, Bill Bradford has shared with the world this sublime rendition of Meatloaf's Finest Contribution to Society. [via ubermondo]

Gah! In retrospect, I'm very doubtful that I am remembering the original correctly - did Meatloaf ever sing this song with Bonnie Tyler? I could swear I saw them sing it as a duet, but google seems to say I'm wrong. Either way, this cover is sweet.

Total Eclipse of the Heart has probably the most overproduced video of the entire 80's. Dancing schoolboys (in a variety of guises: bikers, football players and ninjas.. yes ninjas), Bonnie Turner runing around in a poofy dress and choirs with glowing eyes. I loves it.

I don't remember ever seeing Meatloaf sing this, but it's possible, since it was written by by Jim Steinman, who wrote for Meatloaf. Oh, and as an aside, if you ever get the chance to go see Meatloaf, let it pass on by. Seriously (self link of a concert review).

Let's not forget that "Total Eclipse" got laughed off of the Broadway stage in Dance of the Vampires, an abysmal musical starring Michael Crawford. You can find out more about the show (based on the spectacularly weird comedy The Fearless Vampire Killers directed by Roman Polanski), including the reviews, here. It was something of a big to-do among flop collectors, who expected it to be the next Carrie. By all accounts, it wasn't quite bad enough.

The Meatloaf mix-up is an easy mistake to make, because the Mr. Loaf's best known work - the entire Bat Out Of Hell and BOOH 2 albums - were written by Jim Steinman , who also wrote Bonnie Tyler's hit "Total Eclipse of the Heart." Steinman also wrote one of Air Supply's biggest hits, "Making Love (Out Of Nothing At All)." If you think about it, these vocalists are somewhat interchangeable in their over the top, hyper-emotion delivery of Steinman's songs. You can easily imagine any of them singing any of the songs.

MrMoonpie, I saw Mr. Loaf in concert and he was spot on. It was great. And 2 out of 3 Ain't Bad started life as a country track. I also think it's the best Loaf song out there, and the one I always do when drunk and someone shoves a guitar in my face.
