Noted: WTF is not available. Whether or not this is because it is in use or because it is in the database of inappropriate strings is unknown. posted by loquacious at 3:49 PM on March 17, 2005

sudo is a descendant of the standard *nix utility "su", which stands for "switch user" (or, inaccurately, "super user", since without any arguments it switches to the user "root", the default administrator). I've heard sudo pronounced "soo-doo" -- in which case it means "switch user do", since it allows you to execute a single command as another user -- and as "soo-doe" -- how I pronounce it, since it sounds like the word pseudo, what I conside an oblique metaphor for its function.
chmod is a portmanteau of "change mode". It is a standard *nix utility that allows a user to change the permissions on a file. posted by Plutor at 4:19 PM on March 17, 2005
Child that I am, I have just sent the last 10 minutes making Maine licence plates that say 'PENIS', 'USUCK', 'ARSEY' and other things that don't bear repeating.
